Reading the papers this morning, there were multiple mentions to Capello and his "potential new look team," which included players such as Cleverly, Phil Jones, Sturridge, Lansbury, Smalling... yet nowhere did I see mention of any Liverpool player other than Henderson who was slightly mentioned as "having scored." Which was where the references stopped. With the emergence of Smalling and Cleverly, do you think our youth is being overlooked? They've been fast tracked into the Man United side, so yes they're probably rather good, but it's definitely unfair to dismiss other teams' players based on the merits of the team they play for. Kelly, Coady, Spearing, Sterling, Wisdom... why are none of these being mentioned? Is it because they don't get as much first team football (which the exception of Kelly, who I do realise in injured at the moment)? Well, neither has Lansbury but he scores 2 goals against a poor Azerbaijan side and suddenly he's being touted for an international cap. Henderson scored as well last night, but if he was placed in the side I can imagine national uproar on the scale of Gerrard being mentioned in the World XI. It's about time Capello, and whoever succeeds Capello begins looking at players outside of the top teams at the moment. It's not just us who are losing out; Cahill is doubtful to be called up despite repeated interest from the best teams in England. Peter Crouch won't be called up, because he plays for Stoke - despite having an amazing England scoring record. Pennant, Shawcross, Kevin Davies, Cattermole, Ben Foster, Jarvis, Jagielka and Rodwell won't be called up because they all play for so called "Smaller teams," yet many couldn't do a worse job than we've been doing in England for the past 10 years. It's about time Capello had more of an open mind and recognized talent outside of Manchester United for once. I hope his successor sees that. Note: I know many of you don't care about England, but it's just a bone I have to pick with Capello.
Id say that everyone you have listed bar Pennant and Shawcross, i remember getting at least 1 call up... Also Ben Foster has said he doesn't want to play for England rather than the other way around- which is absolutely ridiculous, it's an honor to play for your country! Anyway, I would also add Shelvey to the list of Liverpool players, I have high hopes for this lad and hopefully he came become the player I believe he could. Also would like to add Coady and Sterling especially are just to young right now and Wisdom hasn't really been tried and tested for Liverpool where as Cleverley and Smalling have shown they can play in the prem- although why Cleverley gets in due to maybe 1 good game for United and Henderson doesn't get a look in for the full squad isn't too logical imo
Yeah, I'm aware they've got atleast 1 cap, but my point is - Kevin Davies may well work better with Bent than Rooney does, but there's no chance we're going to find out because Rooney is going to play every game and Bent is the one more likely to be left out. Parker will be put in place of Spearing, but I'd rate Spearing above Parker - they do nearly the same job, run around a lot and try and win the ball, and Spearing has youth and energy on his side. Sterling is perhaps too young, but Coady is only 1 year younger than Phil Jones. The point you made about Cleverly, is the point I'm trying to make in shortened terms.
Lansbury is ****. I can see your point in regards to Henderson and Kelly but the other Liverpool players you mentioned haven't really done anything yet to warrant being called the future of English football whereas Jones, Kelly, Henderson, Cleverley, Smalling all have.
personally I thought the Davies call up was a strange one, he is a good player at what he does but we don't exactly play to his strengths.. I think Cahill might start tonight though, he certainly deserves to! Yes, fair point on Coady but Jones pretty much played for Blackburn all season last season and looked very good, and has looked just as impressive since his move to Old Trafford... Where as Coady hasn't had a look in at Anfield yet... Although he did look good on pre season especially when he played alongside poulsen! Sorry but Spearing isn't quite as good as Parker imo, he has the potential to be, but isn't there yet. Why Parker is only just starting to play for England is beyond me we've been crying out for him to play- that is obviously going back to what you was saying about little clubs by the way!
I don't have much more than a passing interest in the national team, so are we talking about Capello's actual plans or what the papers are reporting? If it's the latter then there's no surprise there. The papers exist to make money, not to inform in any meaningful way. Man U have the largest fanbase in the country so the papers will talk more about them in order to shift more units.
To be honest i'd rather that the lfc young players stay well away from the england side untill they are established. It brings alot of pressure on the players who play for england as the are expected to do well and critisised heavily when they enveviably fall short of expectation, not to mention the added risk of injuries that we always seem to get. I want to see england do well and i think having some younger players will be an important part of the new look team, however the problem with english players is they are all to similar as they are setup for the premier league where flare and taking on players is drummed out of them from an early age. In other country's where the get more time on the ball this is not the case and its often the best of these foriegn players that are bought in to fill the flare void in prem teams, This will always mean we will underperform as the team is simply not balenced enough for the world stage.
I think some of you are a bit unfair. Conor Coady(18) and Jack Robinson(17) and Andre Wisdom(18) are part of Englands under 19s. Raheem Sterling and Adam Morgan both 16 are part of Englands under 18s. Liverpool had 5 representatives in Englands under 21s. Liverpool currently have 43 internationals at all levels in their academy.
To be honest, despite being English, I couldn't care less about the England team. I only watch the matches to check that none of our players got injured...
I read that blog this morning and then alot of the comments made, not only did the blog overlook our youth but the comments did as well. There is a huge focus on Manure's group at the moment due to the fact that they have got off to an explosive start, granted players like Jones, Smalling and Cleverly are playing well at this moment and will be future England 'Stars' but it will be interesting to see them at the times when Manure arent playing well. I think that Kelly is by far the best English RB, better than Johnson and alot better than Smalling and when fit I would be starting him at RB for England. Henderson looks like he is getting better and better and its a real surprise that more people dont mention him. Flano & Robinson are both alittle young at the moment and need more first team time before being exposed to full international, but things look very promising for them both and in a few years people will be talking about them in the same way In terms of our other youngsters: Coady, Sterling etc its still too early for club first team let alone England (Sterling does look like he will make the break sooner than later) and we should be glad that they these players are playing England U21's,19s,17s. Reading the comments on that blog, alot of people mentioned some players that I would hope dont make England squads, such as Lansbury who looks ****e, can only get into an Arsenal midfield that is waffer thin and then gets loaned out.
Micah Richards is by far the best current English Right Back. I think we are getting abit carried away by Kelly who will make an awesome Centre Back when Carra finally gets dropped but he's no international right back. Henderson had a poor game when he got his only cap. He needs to start palying well for us first. The others havn't played enough first team games to get a mention. Do agree about the over-hype with Man Ure though. It's getting abit ridiculous.
I used to care about England. But when McClaren was manager, that depressed me. Seeing Capello still manager depresses me. And the thought of 'Arry being manager...let's not go there.
To be fair he was raving about martin kelly the other week on sky sports. I'd have to disagree about Micah Richards he's never been that good hence why he doesn't get picked. I would say Martin Kelly is the best english right back, if he wasn't so injury prone he'd have made the slot his own for England by now. Dont forget Glen Johnson is first choice right back for england and I reckon most of us would say Kelly is better
Micah Richards isn't a right back, he's a converted centre back, and has on many occasions being used as a utility player. To suggest Martin Kelly isn't a right back and Richards is, is both foolish and stupid.
Quoted from a Liverpool blog: No saying he cannot play at RB or is no good, just I always read he was a natural CB.
Contscrepe. I was refering moreso to Micah Richards. He's as much a full-back as Chris Smalling is. You are right, Martin Kelly is likely to go the same way as Jamie Carragher and switch to centre back eventually. John Flanagan in fact looks more like a natural full-back than Martin Kelly does, and Martin Kelly can also play left back and has done.
Actually I think Kelly is more likely to stay at RB than move to CB. We have an abundance of CBs at the moment, Coates who was a long future ahead of him, Wisdom who will be a certain starter for us in a year or 2 time. Kelly will then be restricted to the bench, and given his attributes it's not making full use of him. He has good speed, he knows how thread through a cross, he can close players down and he's good at passing along the wing - it's everything you need from a RB, and I actually see Flanagan as more suited to the CB role, despite the fact he's a natural RB.
I totally agree that Kelly could well stay as a right back for a very long time and why not? We've had problems at full back for years and he's looked solid since coming into the side. If it isn't broke then why fix it. Not quite sure why everyone's so keen to see him moved to be honest.
Ze Liverbird. You may have a point. Sometimes players don't always end up where they are tipped to end up. Conor Coady who recently was tipped to be an attacking midfielder could instead ply his trade as a defensive midfielder.
