I'm so glad we went for five at the back and a lone striker who is sub 6ft who we decided to just mindlessly hit balls towards. It's not like he's being marked by the 6ft5in Joel Matip... It's just so... Hughes. So painfully unambitious and devoid of any real tactical nous.
I don't know that there was any tactical approach that would see us competing today, but any plan predicated on this group sitting back and weathering attacks has a rather fundamental flaw...
Yeah... it's almost like we haven't surrendered 13 points in Hughes' 13 games prior to this one. We aren't capable of sitting back and suckering the opponent onto us and then breaking, that much should be pretty bloody obvious by now.
We are not being massively outplayed here, we have let in a soft own goal and a goal from a corner, our defending HAS to get better.
Anyone who has watched any decent portion of Liverpool games will have seen that they find it harder when you get in their faces, not when you back off over the halfway line and into your own half so that not even your one and only forward is inside the area. It may have worked 18 months or so ago, but not now.
