My mate’s annual birthday p*ss up today, cunningly disguised as a day at Beverley races. Last year we got pies for a quid before the last race as the caterers had obviously done more than they could sell. When Jezza is in charge, presumably the pints and pies will be free. There is a strong wind in deepest darkest East Yorkshire today – and we have not started on the beer yet. Depending on the scheduling it is always either the penultimate or final meeting of the season and offers the typical midweek Class 5 sort of dross that I would not normally give a second look. When I saw the original five day entries – 30+ in every race – I was expecting them to split something and create an eight race card. They have but I never expected them to split the closing apprentice jockeys’ race, so now there are two races at the end of the card not worth a bet. In the 3:25, I like the hat-trick seeking WEATHER FRONT, raised 6lb for his most recent victory having won on the course over ten furlongs the time before. The main danger looks to be Matewan, raised 7lb for winning an eight runner ten furlong handicap last time. The sprint at 4:30 is numerically the most competitive race and several of the field have form ties from recent races: veteran Bondi Beach Boy was second to Musharrif and Arnold in his last two races; and Sky Gypsy was third behind runner-up Entertaining Ben on the all weather last time; however, only the last named has a single figure draw. Given the value of a low draw around the dog-leg five furlongs up the Westwood, the mare DAVID’S BEAUTY off bottom weight and drawn four will be cursed with my cash, although she is on a 6lb higher mark for her win as she is out of the handicap. I will have to go in the course betting shop and keep an eye on the Sandown races. I will be interested to see Laafy and Walkinthesand in the 2:40 but my bet of the day is in the 4:20. DAWN DANCER was just touched off over course and distance last time after a layoff and is now reunited with William Buick who won on him in June. Off just a 3lb higher mark, he will take some beating. By then Saaheq should have won the opener but as a handicap good thing, it will be no price.
Morning Had a look at the Twilight card at Naas, backing three 3.20-Chestnut Express @ 7-1 4.25-Chernish @ 10-3 6.30-Cuban Surfer @ 9-1 1 Point Win on each
I don’t know if anyone has seen this but there is a nice piece on ‘Sporting Life’ about The Lieutenant who talks amongst other things about his ‘3 star horses’ and term 2018/19. It also features a chat between the forum’s favourite trainer and Rupert ‘Ding Dong’ Bell’s lad. Recommended to the regular readers. Anyway here’s the link - https://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/nicky-henderson-stable-stars/152573
Best bit of sense I've read recently about the way you should approach these superstars and how to plot their future...
Today I'll be having a crack at these whilst attending a Mental Health meeting. Must need my head feeling... I saw this one earlier and exclaimed, ‘Hendo trains that!’. But it’s not the same Lush Life that the forum’s favourite trainer used to look after. His was born in 2005 and this one is a mere 3YO. However, both Lush Life’s (the one that used to be barned with Hendo and today’s 3YO) are in the colours of Michael Buckley! How strange is that owning 2 animals and calling them the same name – even stranger, methinks, when one is a filly and the other a bloomin' gelding! Anyway I’ll stop waffling and say good luck Lush Life.
Talking of horses formerly trained by the great Lieutenant and formerly owned (at least partly) by Michael Buckley, I see that Newsworthy continues to disappoint. Certainly one that didn't live up to his name, what?
hi all! sandown,1 40 my first thought here was the ultra-consistent kasbah, who has dropped a long way in the weights since his last win,in 2017,where he was in the mid-9ties,compared to his current rating of 77,but i go with the very unexposed SAAHEQ,who won with ease last week, and runs off the same mark today.so,could be a handicap blot..big chance of a follow up today..
Yes, the famous horse that was owned in partnership between Mr Buckley and Rich Richtea, the heir to the biscuit tin fortune. They sold him for just £8k back in January ’17. Did nothing for either Tom Symonds or Neil ‘Mullers’ Mulholland after that but Mrs Love, what a lovely name for a trainer by the way, has rather resurrected Newsworthy’s career with 2 wins, in the past year or so, whilst under her care. Still only an 8YO as well.
sandown,2 40 only the four here, but all of these have already shown significant ability so far,but the best form may well be supplied by GOOD FORTUNE,who was far from disgraced behind two above average rivals, and won his maiden with 10 lengths before that,so,with this drop back in grade, big shout!
yarmouth,3 35: JOHN MUSKER STAKES well, chain of daisies is a horse,i like a lot,and shes sure to be bang there, but this time,i swerve her,and go with a big outsider,RASIMA.im not sure,if she deserves to be so high in the betting,as she has already contested some top races, and was never far away,so definitely possible, she ll outrun her big odds today.e w player..
Nothing on the horsey front but I do like the odd footy wager - Utd/Ajax and Juve all to win this evening 5/1
very good run by RASIMA there.she appeared to be still a bit green, but ran very well nevertheless.. kelso,4 10 this should be dominated by the three market leaders here, barring accidents, but not easy to say,who ll come out on top today.for me,HIGH JINX gets a narrow nod,as he was a very useful stayer on the level.how much progress he has still in him,as a late starter to this game,im not sure, but if his recent efforts are anything to go by with, theres still some fire in the belly.so,should run a big race today..
