There is obviously something wrong. I never claimed we were all angels and some Regiments have their own views and ways but I can tel you in all honestly I have never met a soldier who thought the army taking them back was acceptable. Even people who perhaps sympathised with them doubtless thought they gave all of us a bad name. All I can say on the matter is that me and the guys I served with did our best in a very difficult situation. No one forced us to go there but we joined up to do our jobs to the best of our ability and I believe we did. We had a few screwballs (one Scottish guy in my Regiment went Tonto and shot one of my mates in the armoury inside the Maze) but these were usually spotted before being deployed although some slipped through the net. I don't expect many people will accept or believe it but the vast majority of soldiers who served in NI were ordinary guys doing a job with no prejudice against either side of the conflict.
