Hi all - massive disappointment yesterday, but from a financial perspective it does make some sense.

In reality, how many more points would a player like Ruiz have gained us over the course of the season? 5 I would say TOPS.

I would say that we have a squad which on paper could finish anywhere between 8th and 14th position in the league, but for ease let's say we will finish 12th. Purchasing Ruiz yesterday might have led to us gaining enough extra points to finish 10th - but this is not at all guaranteed.

At an initial outlay of £12million plus wages of about £50k Ruiz would have cost us over a 12 month period roughly £15million. It is not an entirely unreasonable way to look at this to think whether the cost outweighs the benefits of the gains (a two place gain in the table accounts to approx £4million extra). I personally would much rather be in a position in January to invest in the squad again if necessary rather than spanking all out money on players aka Stoke.

Have faith in the team - Newcastle will be here for a lot longer than Ashley.

What about the positive publicity of signing a £10million+ striker? Fans might start to think 'we might actually have a smidgen of ambition here' and it would put more bums on seats, meaning more income.

I assume the attendance vs Fulham was low because of people who were disillusioned by our business this summer.

I'm guessing that £47 million brought in relates to the Carroll sale from a different transfer window.

    Remove that and you have:

    £12 million in
    £12 million out.

Pardew always talked about the £35m, so I am bound to include.

People mention wages, but what about the wages saved and even a moron could figure out that our new players will be on considerably lower wages compared to those that left.

A 10000 undershoot per match is worth about £5m a year, excluding pies, pints and shirts so its a worry!

Those people can stay away as far as I'm concerned, its signing £10m+ strikers plus others that got us in this mess in the first place. If spunking money in Ruiz who odds are won't be any better than Ba is what's required to get these missing fans back then **** em. Fulham attendance wasn't much lower than last seasons.

There is no point in spending 10/12 million if it is a last minute panic buy. I would say give it a while before we get carried away about low attendances. Arsenal at 5.30pm when game is shown on TV, and Fulham at 1.30pm on a Sunday. As with a lot of clubs not everyone lives in/near Newcastle any longer. That is why season tickets are still left. Games are starting at stupid times where people either struggle to get there, or get back home, which adds extra costs when some people are financially struggling.

I dont think the problem is us not willing to spend money on transfers its the problem with wages. Ruiz was like our 5th choice signing after gamerio gervinho and others. But the others turned us down due to wages. I understand that Ashley doesn't want to pay everyone high wages but sometimes you have to.

You do realise that the these figures don't include any loan fees for Xisco or Forster.

If you include the £35m for Carroll, you have to include the £6m for HBA and the loan fee (£1m?) for Stephen Ireland... Still looks bad like but still

Come on. There was no chance of a 'last minute panic buy' in Ruiz anyway. That's just a bit of PR. Newcastle have had 3 months to buy a striker. The only trouble, of course, is that they are not willing to spend the money, and Pardew has known that all along.

sI wasnt going to rise to the '£10m signings got us into a mess' argument but for the sake of my blood pressure I will. The key is the plural...signingS! All people were, quite reasonably, asking for was a fraction of the Andy Carroll money to be reinvested. Not on a raft of £10m signings but a solitary one...that would still have given Mike £25m to write-off against the supposed £20m a year he has been back-rolling us to.

Seriously either the Ashley apologists are out in force to spread doubt and split a potential united front against him using our club as a cash cow, or people have far too easily reconciled themselves to being a selling club and also rans. Im not in a position to say for every person who attempts to defend the indefensible but I cannot stomach either as my own view point. I suggest people ask themselves if they can HONESTLY say, to themselves (nevermind anyone else for now) that they are happy with this outcome and it is acceptable. It is not - making a profit margin of 50% (which is what this years financial statements will read like in twelve months' time on a turnover of £80m) cannot be defended. HTL

What does everyone think the wages of the new players are like compared to those we lost? I'd go with...

    Ba < Carroll
    Santon < Enrique
    Cabaye < Nolan
    Marveaux < Barton
    Obertan > Routlege
    Elliott = Forster
+ Abeid, not to mention releasing Campbell and Kuqi, our wage bill has surely shrunk considerably. I'm SURE ashley could easily have use SOME of the wages lost to just push a tiny little bit more to get a striker.
