You say he won't work hard, his first goal against Fulham was a proper poachers goal. He chanced on the keeper screwing up and it paid off, his second was a great bit of skill to back heel it between the 2 defenders and shoot.

    Point is, he get's goals.
He got one against Scunthrope that was wrongfully ruled out as well as one against Arsenal. So to say he was scoring against poorer opposition is pish!!!!

Aye his first goal backs up my point really, someome else did all the work with the play then the shot (Cabaye) and Best was there to pick up the scraps, absolutely nothing wrong that of course and he was in the right place at the the right time, but this is why its important that hes given good service, hes not the kind of striker who really makes things happen for himself, more of a fox in the box.

His second goal was very skillful and I was chuffed with it but, but once again the ball was drilled to his feet by a very nice cross from Demba Ba, which once again backs up the point, give him the ball in the box and he can score.

Is that not the case with most strikers and their goals, they get in a position to be fed the ball to get a shooting chance regardless of whether it is a pouchers or one where they need to work space?

I get what your saying but he has Ba there backing him up, they havn't played many competative matches together to work up a playing relationship.

I don't think the striker is as serious as people really think it is.

Which is why it's good we've got Ba and Cabaye to provide creativity isn't it?
Fact of the matter is Best has proven that he is good at taking opportunities, and to my mind that's why I fail to understand people who would play Shola over him. He won't ever top Carroll but then very few players will.

Aye but the point I'm trying to get across is that Best is never going to chase the ball down and bust a gut to get a goal, hes not going to out muscle defenders and score headers from anywhere in the box, hes not going to attempt shots from range without them flying over the bar or trickling along the floor if he does, he needs all the work done for him or nowt happens.

I personally think he will be good with through balls from the centre and from the wings, hopefully people like Obertan Marveaux and Ben Arfa can provide this.

the fizzy pop league that Best couldnt score in? 13 of Best apps were in Championship. 3 of Bests goals were against a woeful West Ham side

Doesn't really matter about his lack of goals in the championship if hes popping up with them in the prem though does it? Cancels the other one out.

Best is much better than a lot of us give him credit for and that is the whole point of this thread as far as I can see. It's easy for us all to sit back and facepalm at our current proven best striker being Leon Best because he's essentially a nobody in football terms who had a miserable start to his Newcastle career. But to continue to do that would be unfair, he does have more to his game than merely picking up scraps and he is in decent form for us; regardless of how he scores his goals he still scores his goals and he deserves credit for stepping up when we desperately needed a striker and giving us hope.

Here's to Best <ale> long may he continue to be caught offside 50 times a game and yet still score 2 or more.

Best is exactly what we need right now, a poacher. We have a goalscoring midfield in out fully fit first 11 in HBA and Cabaye as well as creativity in abundance. All Best needs to do is be on the end of any play put his way in the box.

Take your point he plays more in and around the box, doesn't drop into midfield much. But he does hustle defenders and wins headers, knock downs etc.

Him and Carroll are completly diffrent types of strikers, and many have said Carroll is and old fashion style centre forward which are very few and far between.
But the midfield we have should suit Best down to the ground, Cabaye isn't shy to shoot from distance and has an eye for a pass. With the like of Marveux, Obertan and Ben Arfa can see Best doing alright this season.

OBVIOUSLY Carroll is a better player than Leon Best, but I think a lot of people (including Pardew) seem to be writing off Leon Best without giving him a fair chance.

Yes Best was awful in the Championship for us, but he was new to the team / area and it can take a while to settle, but his record since we've been promoted speaks for itself. I honestly don't think Pardew rates him, but whenever he's been desperate and had to start him he's done the business and scored CRUCIAL goals for us.

I never thought we'd get anything more than a point from fulham, but his brace was brilliant and thankfully it's helped take some of the pressure off after all the talk of having a weaker squad.

I'm not saying Best is a world beater, but until January we can't do anything about it and he's our second best Striker and seems to have an eye for the net and for me should be starting upfront more often especially ahead of Strolla who just frustrates me more and more with every appearance he makes.

I really think Ba will find his feet and provide his fair share of goals and I'd like to see him and Best upfront together getting a run of games. With our revamped midfield we should easily create enough to see us safe

with these things we should refrain from stats... Carroll brought a lot to the team, think of his movement and how teams knew he was a danger and the times you saw defenders moving out of position and creating space for others in the process... he was a danger man and he scared defenses because of his strength and aerial threat.. this was a big part of his game too.. not just goals and assists from knock ons.

when January comes hopefully we will finally get a striker in who can scare defences and get the goals.. maybe Ba can get some form and do that before then hopefully

The exact problem Liverpool are having now, they play good football, Carroll comes on and its lump the ball up...
