If you compare Sir Bobby's team of about 8 years ago and Alan Pardew's team now how far behind Sir Bobby's team do you think our current team is

Here is the team we used to play under Sir Bobby:

    Given

    Hughes - Woodgate - O'Brien - Bernard

    Solano - Speed - Dyer - Robert

    Shearer - Bellamy

Here is our probable best team now:

    Krul

    Simpson - Taylor - Coloccini - Santon

    Tiote - Cabaye

Obertan - Ben Arfa - Jonas

    Ba

Defence wise I think we are better, obviously we play a different style and formation to Sir Bobby's team - we lack a lot more in attack than that team then and we are totally different from top to bottom as a club.

I am pretty confident though, that we could eventually maybe push into the European spots that we used to (not Champions League though :()

Basically how far off are we and what do we need to do to push on further?

Its hard to compare because nowadays because in my mind I forget how good they were then and compare our team to what the players are like now. Thats probably my age though - I was about 10/12 when Sir Bobby was in management

Team-wise I don't think we're too far away to be honest, obviously we are light years behind that strike force but the defence is probably as solid if not more so. When you look at the squad as a whole though Pardew's team is woefully thin.

Well Shearer and Bellamy with that service from Nobby and Robert are miles ahead in my opinion.

Same mate, I just started to really take notice of Newcastle during the Sir Bobby days. Miss them days

But, as I say we are different now and I think despite Ashley doing his best to make us struggle we are moving forward positively

    Oh there's a BIG difference.

Shearer - Bellamy **** all over our current strikers.

Dyer/Speed edge it IMO over Tiote/Cabaye.. just because Dyer was a complete midfielder and Speed was just a class act!

That defence was pretty good.. Woodgate was awesome and O'Brien had his moments, Bernard is up there with Enrique in terms of being one of the best LB's this decade has produced and Hughes was always consistent, reliable and solid!

Solano and Robert - TWO TOP CLASS WINGERS!

Need I say more???!! That team was up there in the top four.. our current team will be lucky enough to finish top 10 if I'm honest.

Yeah sure do miss the Shearer/Bellamy partnership. Although, Bellamy was injured half the time...

Too early to compare, we've been back in the PL a year, where as Bobby built that team up over 5 years. Unfair on Pardew that for me.

If we're going off what they were like at that time then:

    Given > Krul
    Hughes > Simpson
    Woodgate > Taylor
    O'brien < Coloccini
    Bernard < Santon

    Solano > Obertan
    Speed < Tiote
    Dyer > Cabaye
    Robert > Jonas

    Bellamy > HBA
    Shearer > Ba

    Given

    Hughes Woodgate Coloccini Santon

    Solano Tiote Dyer Robert

    Shearer Bellamy

Overall Robson's team ****s on Pardew's but give the lads another season and who knows a couple could change.

Agree with that team - maybe put Santon right back and Bernard left back

That team could probably win the Premier League in its day

I reckon in 3/4 years we can build a brilliant team - if we secure contracts for Colo/Willo/ Jonas/raylor/Simmo/Shola and the young guns. (Tiote/Cabaye/Santon/Marveaux/Obertan are already on 5 year deals I think). We add quality players to positions lacking and only lose dead wood - Lovenkrands/Perchino/Smith/Guthrie, we could have an amazing team and reach Europe. Thinking about it - the players we lost this summer all wanted unreasonable contracts and that is what happens in the merry-go-round of a football club. Your fan favourites have to leave sometime - Brett Emerton at Blackburn is an example.

If we have a solid base of
    Krul
Santon - Saylor - New CB (colo is reasonably old but could be a good back up and club captain) - New LB
    Tiote - Cabaye
New RM - Ben Arfa - Jonas/Fergie/New LM
    New St
This is a good foundation to base our team.

The thing is Jonas and Colo are in a Barton/Enrique situation at the end of this season where they will need their contracts extending and I can't see Ashley giving Colo the £80k a week he gets at the moment. Think they will both be off sadly :(

HBA over Bellamy? I don't think so. Not in-terms of ability and what they can bring to the team.

I would have loved to have seen a partnership of HBA just behind Shearer.

Anyway, I think we could push for a European spot if we had Shearer back when it was in his prime.

Bellamy and Shearer back then were lethal and PROVEN in the premier league, I would have the Bellamy of 8 years ago over the HBA of the present whos hardly kicked a ball for us and hasnt proven himself yet.

If it was between the Bellamy of now and HBA I'd go HBA due to Bellamy turning into a **** and getting on a bit.

Wouldn't cry over losing Jonas but Coloccini will be a huge miss, maybe with him being in his 30's he might consider a slight pay decrease? Hope so.

Hope so too, but I think he could go to a Valencia/Sevilla type team

Jonas I would miss - gives 100% every game but it won't be hard to replace him after all we do have a lot of wingers here - a lot left footed too :)

I would be sad to see him go but not too bothered, puts in a good shift and is fantastic at getting back and helping the defense but wouldn't it be nice to replace him with someone who can whip a ball with a bit of pace into the box, or even have the odd good shot.

    He's decent though.
