Article: Best vs Carroll | Football, Newcastle

Everyone keeps complaining about having to find a 'replacement for Carroll', so I decided to do a little research to compare Best's apps and goals with Carroll's apps and goals before he was sold. Just to see how much Carroll brought to NUFC and how much of a gap we needed to fill.

Leon best - 13 apps - 8 goals

Points contributed = 0

Newcastle 1 - 2 Everton
Minus 1 Best goal = 0 - 2
Points contributed = 0

Newcastle 2 - 1 Fulham
Minus 2 Best goals = 0 - 1
Points contributed = 3

8 goals scored = 4 points contributed


Verdict:

Carroll - 11 goals total = 6 points contributed - 54% goals got points
Best - 8 goals scored = 4 points contributed - 50% goals got points

Andy Carroll - 19 apps - 11 goals - 57% conversion rate
Leon Best - 13 apps - 8 goals - 61% conversion rate

It's almost evens on goals which directly contributed points, with Carroll having 4% more.

On actual goals out of apps, Best edges it with 61% to Carroll's 57%.

So, in a nutshell, in-terms of importance SO FAR, Best and Carroll are almost exactly the same.

Compare the assists and you will find yourself in a completely different outcome.

Also as soon as we sold Carroll we started playing good football

 

Think we might as well compare toenail length about as relevant as this post!

 

Goals to game ratio isn't the same as conversion rate, that's shots per goal.

 

How do assists compare? Considering that they are known for holding the ball up and laying off, I am curious as to who has allowed for more attacks and goals coming via them!

 

At the end of the day Andy Carroll is twice the player of Leon Best and we do need to replace him

 

This - Carroll assisted a few against Villa, Nolan's against Liverpool, Shola's against sunlun' and Barton's against Liverpool. plus many more I can't be bothered to think about

 

Carroll got a lot of assists as well as goals, and many challenges he won in the air also led to goals that weren't a direct assist, Best in my opinion is mediocre in the air at best and from what I can recall hasnt made a single assist.

However having said that we now IMO definitely have better creative midfielders in the side so maybe the creative side of Carroll wont matter quite as much?

However if you are comparing them, its a close contest in goals but as a complete striker,Carroll wins hands down.

Best played against weaker teams than Carroll also.

Yeah, Carroll is such a presence - would score 15-20 per season for us for the rest of his career and assist a whole lot more

Don't think Best will ever do that.

 

Best HAS more to his game than Carroll!

More movement, agility and ability! Although Carroll dominates him in terms of playing the ''target man'' role.

 

Carroll was obviously the better player, the point being i suppose that Best isnt nearly as bad as some seem to be making out, deserves a chance and hopefully could be a good un for us

 

If you don't already know which of Carroll's assists actually contributed to point scoring goals, then you really can't claim that, can you?

No idea. Can't be arsed to compare assists as well. This is goals only for now.

Still rather interesting, but some of the Best-haters can't seem to get their head around clear facts.

That is absolute ****e. Carroll has better strength, a better shot, greater presence and a few England caps to prove it. And he scored more goals

 

This! Look at Carroll now, playing in a creative Liverpool side, he looks ****. We played to his strengths, but since he's gone we've played much more attractive football that is more suited to Best than Carroll.
