I wouldn't make him an automatic starter, put it that way. A decent option, though.

Definitely a 4-4-2 to me col, but Wells dropped further than Hemed when required.

You will never get real width from Eze & Freeman, but I think the intention was to keep it to 3/4 width of the pitrch if we could. I also thought Eze defended better than Freeman, but I was pleased to see Pawel replace him for the last few minutes.

A number of posters have mentioned Eze's lack of defensive ability. Really? I thought that he was excellent defensively, he never let anyone get past him today and on Tuesday. He is, imo, not just a luxury player, he is a team player with an abundance of talent and skill.

Just a few thoughts from today:-

    - On Tuesday the team received boo's at half time & today were clapped off at that time. Yet, I thought we played better in the first half against Bristol City than we did today!

    - Leistner & Lynch played a lot closer to each other today & looked better defenders for it.

    - Although Lumley has a long way to go, he exudes more confidence than Ingram does. I also think he is more vocal & our players listen to him. The most pleasing part of his performance was how he came & punched the ball clear from Wigan's last free kick.

    - Wells workrate was superb & I thought he was easily the best player on the pitch.

    - I enjoyed how the players showed their relief & celebrated at the end of the match. Especially how they all went & congratulated Lumley.

    - Please can we stop giving away these stupid free kicks! Not that they caused us much danger today, but that will not always be the case & most could have been avoided.

The wine is tasting good tonight!

Yes, I thought the narrowness was designed to prevent them playing through us - let them get it wide if they can and we'll deal with the crosses, if they come.

Well chuffed with the result today, keeping a clean sheet almost as important as the win. Got to feel for Ingram as he's kind of been made the scapegoat but you've got to have confidence in your goalie. Hope we can continue the cup run on Tuesday as well and keep the belief growing. Would like Steve to use a bit of that man management he used with Junior Hoilett with Luongo and Freeman as we need them ticking. Overall got to be happy, just hope it's not a false dawn.

Has anyone actually said it was 4-3-3? Some may have assumed that from the starting personnel, but it really wasn't.

Totally agree with your point about Lumley being vocal. From what I saw he never stopped talking to his defenders and telling them wher he wanted to go. I can’t compare him to Ingram as I haven’t seen him play this season but assume he was less so.

Another point is the passion that Hemed showed when he scored the goal and when he was subbed.....made me think he isn’t just another journeyman out on loan and not having any pride. We might of got ourselves a good ‘un there.

The Official stream had us in 4 3 3 right before, but Andy Sinton said after just a few minutes that it looked like we started in close to a 4 4 2. It was certainly narrow, with Eze and Freeman usually further forward than Luongo and Scowen, yet we were still outplayed through midfield as the stats show. We just won the most important 1 stat, thanks Hemed. I thought Scowen, Luongo and Freeman still seemed a way off their best of last season, but Freeman got through a lot of work, often good going forward but gave the ball away when helping out in and around our box.

A bit of a long old day for me, just got home from a bbq with some longstanding childhood friends.

Some quick observations before hitting a very late sack.

It felt like we were more comfortable with Lumley between the sticks. The defence have had some stick of late ( rightly so ) but performed well today. Some say that they were still a shambles but they worked hard and kept the quality of Griggs and Powell very quiet who had no clear scoring opportunities and kept a clean sheet. All four of them had a good game.

We need to be a lot better when we have the ball. Our midfield three who were much lauded for their efforts last season are performing like strangers. Luongo particularly needs to up his game. There's something wrong with him,his energy levels are down, is he still sulking because he didn't get to play at the world cup?

The two new loanees looked a class above anything we already have despite a lack of match fitness. It's great to see that a bit of quality up top has the ability to turn not even a half chance into a goal.

The subs ... McClaren swapped Matt Smith for 'The Prince Of Wells' and Wszolek for Eze on 87 minutes. We then had a corner kick which Freeman looked like he was going to cross into the box on 89 minutes and then we withdrew everyone and there was not a blue and white shirt within the 18 yard box. We played a short corner and tried to run down the clock. From then on it was eleven men behind the ball trying to grind out a 1-0 win, but wouldn't it have been better to bring on Baptiste instead of Wszolek to bolster the defence once he set his stall out?

Anyway we won and they didn't despite out footballing us. Wigan played better football than Bristol City and left with nothing. Strange old game.

    What number 10 isn’t
He is maybe blonked there to drift inside as and when
He is not Pele but does have the skill to drift into space at the moment I would like player expression is out the window as SM tries to understand what he is doing anyway
EZE does have a gift to find time on the ball no doubt
If confidence returns he could be very important if he is allowed to play his game

I haven’t seen anything yet in terms of direction from the coach that doesn’t make all our players look like a shower of ****

    But I believe in them
Bar Wells and Hemed both looked fine yesterday but can all change

It starts and ends with SM and he is a lucky man imo but has my benefit of the doubt until the next game on Tuesday

Lose that at home against BR who are ****e it all kicks off again

To reiterate TerryB point. On Tuesday about 70 minutes in City got a dangerous free kick Ingrams held up 3 fingers meaning 3 in the wall.... Freeman waved the requested away, walked away from leaving Eze only there...Freeman and BFG2 marshalled the free kick ignoring Ingram.....I thought then he had lost the confidence of his defence.....he had already had a talking to for allowing a free kick to skid through his fingers soon after the goal. His confidence has always been shallow.
Lumley's confidence is currently good...let's hope we can keep it like that....

He's a real talent. We've lucked out picking him up for nothing. Millwall will be kicking themselves when we sell him for a load of money.

Sounds like the long knives waiting for Caesar.

It seems from a few posts that SM had a plan to narrow the field and the players carried it out. Sounds like everyone working together.

A way to go? Of course, but as others have said - credit to the full team of staff and players (even those who didn’t play so well in the middle - if they pick up then we should get better).

Lose together. Win together. Build together.

Agree of course but there is a buck that doesn’t stop at everyone

I will crow and apologise to SM when I have some faith in him

Having watched 4 games I haven’t seen the man that coached United’s kids and made them play and tackle sometime that should be easy for him apparently especially at this level . He took the England team backwards imo

I accept the team we’re much more narrow yesterday but certainly not joining in the rally cry after a narrow 3 points

I am expecting him to identify team play in a heartbeat and put it right immediately with a wealth of tactical adjustments at real time not borrow a few unwanted players at the last minute ... it don’t rock my boat

Mass and the Rat run our team and that looks fragile currently... I do not blame any player as we have good players

This was lucky first aid imo

Chance to put BR to the sword on Tuesday with his strongest team available

Clean sheet nothing else our goalkeeper shouldn’t have anything to do in that match

Although our midfield looks strong on paper I think it’s a weak link as we seem to get over run time & again & putting pressure on our defence.

Luongo's a talented but inherently lazy player imo. At his best, his relaxed style impresses. At his worst, he disappears for long periods of a game. If he won't pull his finger out now, he should be dropped until he comes to his senses
