This offbeat classic came from a side project of Talking Heads' married members Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, Tom Tom Club...
The Replacements came from the same Minniapolis Punk scene that spawned my favourite band Hüsker Dü, they managed to release a full LP first, Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash and this is the opening track from it...
The funny thing about this song is that I remember it so well - that I loved it and my parents were horrified and thought their sweet little no7 was going to turn punk and rebel against society (I was 11 I think!). What is weird is that I would love it if my daughter liked this now, or even my grandchildren and would think that they were quite cool.....
I think this is the first single I bought in 1981. Lack of airplay after John Lennon had died did for it but it showcases their Banshees influence before they went really poppy and hit the big time.
It wouldn't be 1981 without this. How did it not get to No.1? In view of what beat it I despair at the record buying public.
Oh .... Shadduppayourface ....... the record buying public have excellent taste .... “Granddad”, “Matchstalk Cats and Dogs”, “There’s No One Like Grandma” and virtually any number 1 since 2000
