I saw this game, the last time we played them in the big league! Absolutely blew us away in the first half, and amazingly only rewarded with a 2-0 lead! The band played Bladen Races to the Geordie fans at half time as a tribute to their fine support. Fans later questioned if we should have encouraged them in this respect. We scored the only goal in the second half, but well beaten as I recall! Played in grey, wished they had worn their mighty black and white kit! :emoticon-0103-cool:

We don't have a good record against them in recent years with them beating us home and away in the last 3 seasons we have played them since 2009. This includes a 5.1 thrashing at St. James Park.

Who scored our goal in that game? I recall it was a long range effort. Was it Aaron Wildig?

We did beat them 2.1 in the cup in 2017 at their place so not all bad.

I didn't have a problem playing their song to their fans. Only the once though. I know the hardliners didn't like it but a bit of respect amongst clubs doesn't harm.

Yes it was Wildig who is better known these days as an answer to random City trivia questions!

Our record v Newcastle is appalling but I can recall 2 home wins in 1979 and 1981. The former included what is still in my top 5 City goals ever- an extraordinary effort by Gary (Basil Fawlty) Stevens.

#1 of course is John Buchanan against them down west:emoticon-0148-yes:

He didn't do ordinary goals. Never seen such a small bloke strike the ball so hard.

I saw Johnny Buchanan score that 100 yarder (or so it seems) against Swansea. Tosh was screaming out instructions to his merry men, because he knew what was coming....it came 3-3.....! :emoticon-0103-cool:

New loan signing Harry Arter is expected to make his Cardiff debut, having been ineligible against parent club Bournemouth last weekend.

Kenneth Zohore, who has been nursing a groin problem, faces a late fitness test, while Aron Gunnarsson is sidelined with a knee injury.

DeAndre Yedlin is out for Newcastle after the right-back injured his knee in the home defeat by Tottenham. Malcolm McDonald, Geordie favourite, could make his first start in an age.

Javier Manquillo is set to deputise for him, while Salomon Rondon could start.

@SteveBowercomm: Whatever the outcome this season, Cardiff City are going to try to enjoy the Premier League ride. They will certainly savour their first home game back in the top flight, a prospect which looked fairly unlikely for most for most of the last four years.

They will be determined to win too. If they are to maintain last season's theme of defying the odds then they need results at home. Their last stay yielded only five victories at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Equally, Newcastle will see this as an opportunity to get off the mark as they look for an 11th consecutive league win over their opponents. Victory would inject some much-needed positivity into the Tyneside air.

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock on the future of Rafael Benitez: "The one person Newcastle can't afford to lose is Rafa. They can get away with losing any player, but his commitment to Newcastle has been fantastic.

"He's in his last year (of his contract with Newcastle) now, so it'll be interesting to see how that develops because I'm sure worldwide he will be targeted."

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez: "Everybody is spending big money on players, but will they all work out? We will see.

"It will be easier for some of our players as they have been in the Premier League for a year, but now other squads are stronger. Is our starting eleven better than before? I hope so, but we'll see."

I cannot see many goals in this, but the dynamic between the two managers is going to be great to watch, because Warnock and Magpies boss Rafael Benitez have a bit of history.

    Prediction: 1-1

Cardiff won just five home games during their only previous Premier League campaign in 2013-14 (D5, L9)
    Head-to-head

    • Cardiff's run of 10 defeats against Newcastle is their worst ever league record against any team.
    • Newcastle's 10 consecutive league wins is their best such run against any opponent.
    • Cardiff's last league victory in this fixture came at home in the Second Division in 1981, while their last top-flight win against the Magpies was in 1961.
    • However, the Bluebirds did register an FA Cup victory at Newcastle in 2014.
    Cardiff

    • Cardiff have won eight of their 10 home games (D1, L1) in 2018.
    • This is their first home fixture in the Premier League since losing 2-1 to Chelsea on the final day of the 2013-14 season.
    • Cardiff have opened both of their Premier League campaigns with 2-0 defeats. In 2013-14, they beat Manchester City at home in their second match.
    • The Bluebirds could lose their opening two league games for the first time since 1994-95, when they went on to be relegated to the fourth tier.
    • Neil Warnock is winless in nine matches against Newcastle, drawing two games and losing seven, since a 1-0 win as Sheffield United boss in November 2006.
    Newcastle

    • Newcastle have lost five of their last six Premier League fixtures.
    • They could lose four consecutive away games in the Premier League for the first time under Rafael Benitez.
    • The Magpies have failed to win their opening away match in the last five Premier League campaigns (D1, L4), since a 1-0 victory at Sunderland in 2011.
    • Benitez is undefeated against Neil Warnock in all five previous managerial meetings, winning the last four.
    • Benitez has lost all three away games at newly-promoted sides as Newcastle manager.
    • Joselu could become the first player to score in Newcastle's opening two Premier League matches since Alan Shearer in 2003.

Harry Arter a bit stupid kicking out, although booked will probably face action. Is Etheridge the most underrated player in the team, he looked class and confident even before the penalty? Murphy has made a good start, hope he doesn’t fade away in the near future. Take the point! :emoticon-0103-cool:

Good saves by Etheridge - but his distribution is still shocking.

Zero idea how to play against ten men - completely lost our shape that had made us the better team for the previous 70 mins.

Need to put the ball in the back of the net. Zero shots on target in 2 games - even if here they played very well and looked threatening. Arter and the Spaniard looked top class <ok>

    Exactly my thoughts.
Sending off did us no favours.
Their keeper didn’t have to make a save.

Saying that I thought City looked half decent at times and whilst I enjoyed the game, if only NW had spent some money on a striker as where are these goals coming from?

Thought our midfield trio were terrific.

ps. I thought the championship refs last season were bad; this guy was a shocker.

We know he can be better but Zohore is playing like a League 2 lumberer at the moment. His pace and positional awareness are way off and he can't head a ball with any intent - that's both on target and as a target for the lumping.

I agree the midfield 3 were a relevation. Ralls, Camarasa and Arter can lift this side out of the route 1 rut we're plying. Unless Madine is on the pitch, we must use this midfield trio to play in Reid and Murphy and Zohore on the floor. The only excuse now for the long ball is set pieces to the likes of Morro and Bamba. Nothing wrong with being direct, but lumping it during open play is a waste of time.

Etheridge grows with every game - both he and Manga have looked brilliant so far.

Promising....Back five all excellent (special 'thumbs up' for Manga). Midfield a revelation. Only Junior & Zohore disappointing. If only we'd signed a striker........(sigh).

Morrison got lucky with that penalty save. Why was he throwing his arm up there like that?

Overall a better performance. I guess we need to hope that Murphy, Reid, and Zohore can get about 10 each over the season.

Momentum - throwing himself at the cross. Should have kept his arm down but it wasn't deliberate and a bit harsh as he was so close to the crosser . Seen them not given as well.

Hope Etheridge doesn't have to make it 3 in 3 next week. Now that would be a record.

A decent striker makes all the difference it seems in this league. Callum Wilson yesterday for example.

It’s unavoidable to suggest the failure to bring one in will haunt us. Zahore, Ward and Madine are sadly not PL quality.
