Not bowled over by the prospect of Angel Rangel coming in. Why waste wages on a 35 year-old? He might keep Kakay, who's been looking good, out of the team and I'd rather sink or swim with the youngsters who are our future.
Not sure he would...but what if Kakay got injured or suspended....no cover Sent from my STF-L09 using Tapatalk
I assumed Baptiste would act as cover. We had 28 in our squad list in Saturday's programme (excluding Ray Jones) which was four more than Sheffield United. That's my point: if we are not going to use our youngsters, do we need more bulk in the squad, or quality? And whilst I'm on it, loans are all very well but they are wasted loan fees/wages. Our business model nowadays is, apparently, to buy cheap and sell high. So how does all that work with an ex Premier League 35 year old? Haven't we got, or couldn't we find, another promising youngster? What's happened to our much vaunted scouting network? Is that the best they can do? Or do you never win anything with kids....?
It's a fair point but the aim is to have some older wiser heads in there as well. We're not an attractive option for someone just starting out whereas there will be some reasonably priced older pros still out there come the end of the transfer window.
So good that he has been released by Swansea, a championship side, despite being their club captain last season (in which he only played a handful of games)? His CV is headed "Seeking one last pay day" and, given our recent reputation, he is coming to the right club for that!
And why not? As he hasn't been snapped up, his wage demands might be more affordable. However, given the man, I suspect his desire to relocate to the North is paramount.
The training camps that offer a last chance for hundreds of Europe's free agents - BBC Sport https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45043408 Wonder if Gary Penrice and co have any scouts at these camps?
You'd have thought that he could find something there. Some might be willing to earn a contract playing for expenses and proving themselves
Jeff is right in my opinion - 5 month contract. Experienced pro that will help the youngsters. Works for both parties given our current predicament.
I ain't going to knock the capture of Rangel as this is where our club is at. An ever increasing distance of competing in the top half at this level
Dave Mac saying a lot of clubs interested in Manning on loan, also says he thinks it's a good idea if he goes away and gets 30+ games under his belt. Personally I'd want to keep him, he's got to be close to the starting 11. Useful player in my book.
It's a very short contract to provide much-needed cover, Rodders. He seems like a good egg, won't be getting big wages, and will be a good mentor for Kakay, and later, Furlong. It's a million miles from the 'last pay day' signings under Warnock/Hughes/Redknapp. Eminently sensible if you ask me.
Don’t see why he d be allowed to go. Far better player than Cousins and he’s probably our reserve left-back too.
I agree. Now that it is just a 5 month contract, this seems very pragmatic: can't do any harm for a pretty modest outlay.
