Massive chance that we’ll go down this season. Only need to look at Derby, Forest, Leeds etc and see how hard it can be getting back up. Wonder what Gao would prefer? If he couldn’t afford to take us over and make us competitive he shouldn’t have bought us in the first place.

The stats over the past, I think about eight years, are amazing. Take away Newcastle, and barely any side comes straight back up. I think it's something like three occasions only.

A lot of people - fans and media - thought Villa would fly straight back. Instead, they're facing their third year in a row in the Championship now. And needed a takeover this summer to avoid potentially following the likes of us and Leeds into the third tier.

I was under the impression that we were limited due to overall wage bill but don't understand how it's Carillo specifically. A few questions:

Would the fee not be covered by the Virgil money?

How much are we paying him?

How much are we still paying now?

    Who sanctioned it?

How can we be so skint when you account for tv money and player sales? And post profits every year?

Do we have relegation release clauses in contracts?

Can the club financially handle a relegation taking into account the parachute payments?

It's probably just a bullshit excuse tbh.

Gao's situation is probably not as good as at first thought because of China's crackdown on money leaving China. but I doubt he was ever going to be a sugar daddy. Markus was one relative to a first division club, but massive money is need to really compete regularly....though good seasons are always possible if you get a bunch of good players at the same time. Sadly we missed the chance a few seasons back when we were at our best.

I still think we will be ok this season if the players regain belief and we don't start losing unnecessary points. However, like many fear it could go pear-shaped.

If the wage bill is a problem, we really should have redoubled our efforts to offload the fringe players, even if it meant loans. We also shouldn't be looking at cheap buys of the ilk of Ings, because they end up with very healthy wages that then become nearly impossible to offload. We're looking more and more like a Sunderland or Villa in that regard.

It's a massive concern. And it's a road we're been going down for the best part of two years now. On and off the field.

Spoiler alert. It doesn't end well.

Dunno about the rest of the questions, but on this one: unless Gao has a whole bunch of money stashed in Europe, and I doubt that he does, we have maybe two years in the Championship before administration becomes a genuine concern. We have handed out a lot of nonsensically-generous contracts to backups; not fatal while in the PL, but it would be in short order in the Championship.

Massive money is needed to compete, all PL clubs have massive money due to the obscene TV money and prize money for staying in the division (still a hefty chunk upon relegation). Owners aren’t allowed to invest massive amounts of money into clubs due to FPP, the big clubs all have huge sponsorship deals and other commercial income which is why they can make the mega moves. The point is, clubs like West Ham, Leicester, Fulham, Wolves, Everton etc have owners that aren’t taking as much money out of the club. That is why we’re not competing, we’d be in huge trouble if we got relegated last season, as we have stupid contracts on players no one else wants. So we might as well risk it as we’d be in the **** anyway.

The board can dress it up any way they want, but we’re not constrained by the wage bill as players loaned out are deducted, by however much the other club have agreed to pay. The situation in China had also changed before Gao took us over with regards to finance and that’s why the deal was long delayed. Clubs like Inter, Wolves, Atletico and some others with Chinese owners have these problems. Kat sold us to a dud, it’s as simple as that (to quote Nigel Adkins).

Carrillo is partially to blame in the sense that we are almost certainly paying part of his wages. The problem isn't Gao having money or not or where the TV money is or isn't going. It is this:
    http://www.financialfairplay.co.uk/latest-news/premier-league-update-their-ffp-rules

The likes of Forster and Long are blocking our ability to sign more players as no one will take them off our hands and give us more wage cap room, even if we have the money to spend we are not allowed to spend it. It is not a shock that Wolves and Fulham are spending big, they have a Championship wage bill so a lot of room to fill out with new players.

No, FFP is not a problem for us. I've been over this more times than I can count, but please look at our profit on player sales, and the manner in which that can be used to rapidly grow one's cap on wages.

While I agree with the rest of your post there's absolutely no way we're at a ffp limit.

****ing hell I'm pissed off already and the season hasn't even started. The only thing keeping me sane at the moment is that the very lovely Mrs Godders:emoticon-0115-inlov has stockpiled our spare bedroom with so much food in preparation for a disastrous Brexit deal that it looks like a mini branch of Sainsbury's. She has also converted all of our savings into euros so that we can nip across to France to buy food when the shops here are empty. I am not going to tell you where I live as you will all come round and try to steal my food which is why the Government have a plan to deploy troops on the streets post Brexit. The future looks really grim from where I am sitting so should I be worried that we haven't bought a new striker or that we might be relegated when we are all going to ****ing starve. FFS where is your sense of priority? Football or feeding the family?

The board made a serious mistake tying down all those players....though they did it for a reason (and many fans agreed with it). They are trying to correct that which has no doubt constrained us a bit....but there is obviously money or we wouldn't have been able to buy the players we did. I bet they hoped to shift Forster by now, but only a Championship side would be willing to take that risk....but we'd end up subsidising it to a huge extent. And would Forster agree to go to a lower side? Mistakes have been made, so loins will be girded and lucky horseshoes polished.

No one is saying that, all that is being discussed is if 20m and paying half wages effect us that much than something is up

What profit? We have spent the Van Dijk profit. In fact you just reminded me that Carrillo's signing is worse that just his wages as he was signed to a relatively short contract, so his transfer cost per year is high wiping out a big chunk of the Van Dijk money in accounting terms.

Probably not right now but a new signing could easily take us over it.
