    Like wot I said!

Word of warning though. Be careful just taking headlines about the food stuffs. Everyone is different and some food they list might not be bad for some. My mate used to have his gout triggered by strawberries.

I have never believed the use of “poultry” as a problem for gout sufferers. Game poultry yes, but not always chicken. Breast is better than leg too.

Yeah all I eat is chicken breast and turkey mince (which comes from turkey breast). Have it with veg mainly, sometimes rice as well so think I should be OK on the gout side of things. My diet is very high in protein though, I try and have a gram of protein per pound of body weight daily.

Thanks for the info though, I had no idea it was caused mainly by protein

Purines aren’t proteins Fats. The most common source of dietary purines is from DNA and RNA in meats and seafood, and in some vegetables like cauliflower, asparagus, soya beans and mycoprotein-based foods like Quorn. Purines and pyrimadines, which are structurally similar, form the helical structure of DNA and RNA. All dietary purines are metabolised to uric acid, which is the waste product. Gout is one of the forms of hyperuricaemia, which happens when more uric acid is formed than can be excreted through the kidneys, and that can be caused by poor diet, certain drugs, but also alcohol, which can increase purine breakdown. Beer even has its own purines from the yeast. Obviously that is very simplified, but it’s important to distinguish between purines and proteins. Just going on a high-protein diet won’t cause gout, as long as the types of food containing the protein aren’t over-rich in purines.

Just watching “Abducted - Elizabeth I’s Child Actors” on BBC4, an astonishing piece about how theatre companies employed child catchers to seize children off the streets, usually grammar school kids, and force them to work as actors. The children’s parents had absolutely no right to demand the return of their boys as the Queen had signed an Impression Warrant to enable church choirs to seize potential choristers, and the theatre companies just extended the use of the warrant. Of course, there were no regulations governing the welfare of the child actors, so doubtless abuse of all kinds went on.

Edit: it’s on record that Shakespeare never employed abducted children, his child actors were all officially apprenticed. He apparently strongly disapproved of the practice of abduction.

Yes you are right and I simplified that a bit. To be clear though, I didn’t say that going on a high protein diet would cause gout, I said that is what caused mine. During that time I was eating one tin of mackerel a day, just as an example, so I was piling the purines in through my high protein diet. I just didn’t realise.

You have emphasised an important point: people should go with the headlines. Always seek professional support, although I was told by my first doctor that purine was a type of protein. I’ve seen several GPs over this and registered with the Gout association, with several different opinions. I got lucky this year when I wanted a follow up phone call following the attack I had December onwards this year. The GP who phoned me wasn’t the GP I’d seen and I’m conversation it materialised that she had studied Gout as a bit of a specialist topic. She was by far the most helpful person of spoken to or seen.

My diet is almost exclusively meat, potatoes, root veg. and fatty snacks. I've made it into my mid-50s so have no truck for any new-fangled regimens.

I know I give him a lot of criticism, so credit when it's due, fair play to Lewis Hamilton taking a stand (and going on a 2 hour beach clean) against use of plastic bottles etc.

My gout was self induced by months of burgers for lunch and 2 litres of coke a day . Once you get it though , the list of things that can trigger it is massive . Most painfully thing ever happened to.me was severe gout in both ankles at the same time . Indescribable pain .

Yeah... that ain’t getting him in my good books. Great he did the clean up, but I hope someone educated him that the problem isn’t the “use of plastic bottles” but is really human behaviour. Itlldrive me nuts if he becomes the latest celebrity face declaring an uneducated War on Plastics. :(
