Maybe a different story today of course as they are superior in all armed divisions

Any way how have we got to this ?

EU scientists have now been able to produce highly accurate models of what will happen to the UK during both a Leave and Remain scenario. The results are in. Take a look.

Whatever. In your fantasy island perhaps. Why don't we just shout? Apparently that always works for the Brits when others think we're bonkers.:headbang:<laugh><doh>:emoticon-0148-yes::emoticon-0118-yawn:

Trolls. Sometimes it's hard to detect them, but they're out there, stirring things up and rubbing their hands in front of a glowing LCD display at the response they get from people who don't realise they don't really mean it.

And then there are the people who really do have an agenda, dripping their comments into the ether like an angler putting bait into the stream to see who bites and swallows.

Luckily, we all only have the one vote each - and in some cases not even that. Think of the damage we could do if we had more.

DT has it right, I think. Back to the real world for a while.

Or why not just contribute on stuff other than Brexit? I’ll give it a go. It’s actually just the most present thing on the agenda.

Things which caught my attention this morning, and which Kiwi’s cut and paste mania have referenced are firstly the Johnson ‘Islamophobia’ stuff (should cheers Strolls up, it’s in the press!) mainly because it’s an illustration of the language being corrupted. Johnson is a twat and a wannabe shock journo, but he was actually arguing against laws to restrict people covering their faces for religious reasons, and what he said was not actually ‘phobic’. I think we are as ****ed up on what ‘Islamophobia’ is as we are on ‘anti semitism’.He should talk more about his family history. His (executed) great grandfather on the male side was a minister in the Ottoman government of Turkey, and Johnson’s grandfather adopted the surname of his mothers father rather than stick with Kemel. I’m wandering here, but my interest is in the language rather than Johnson or Islam.

A much bigger story is the climate change stuff, which Ski has posted on the geek thread, and which is all over the news today. We are allegedly reaching a tipping point after which global warming is irreversible. Of course equally huge warming has already happened on earth, entirely naturally, before, with levels of CO2 in the atmosphere which we are close to reaching. Average temperatures in our latitudes were over 26C, with heatwaves weeks on end over 40C. Humans couldn't live in what are currently the Tropics. Ultimately the planet will be fine, humans will suffer, perhaps terminally. We have the ability to stop it in all the well known ways - stopping CO2 emissions, paying the countries with huge rainforests to stop cutting it down, and devoting technology research to extracting CO2 from the atmosphere. But of course we lack the decision making machinery to make and stick to the global decisions required to make a difference, and the drift towards populist nationalism will not help. Still, I quite like this weather now I’m used to sleeping in it and I’ll be dead before it gets much worse. “I’m alright Jack” should be the motto of our times, even though it is evidently not the case.

I don't have a problem with what Boris said. I pretty much agree with him. It's interesting that an liberal country like Denmark has banned face masks. I wouldn't rule it out here, but there needs to a cogent reason - integration, security etc. May be he can turn his sights next on travellers (often not British) that should stick to designated parks and not take over children's recreation grounds, school grounds, cricket pitches etc defecating all over them, stealing from local shops, threatening people and conducting general anti-social behaviour.

Don't know much about the science of global warming. But you just know that next summer, it'll piss down every day and the debate will get deferred.

I found Boris’ stuff quite amusing, it’s hardly Prime Ministerial is it? Face covering is difficult for liberals - don’t want to tell people what to do, especially if they are a ‘culture’ but how do they deal with people who force women to cover themselves up in public from puberty, that’s hardly liberal is it? Standing up for liberalism by being illiberal, doublethink! It’s also a problem for the libertarian right, those who believe governments should not interfere with our lives at all.

I equally don’t know much about the mechanics of global warming, though I know you can’t attribute individual events to it, just overall trends. I am convinced it’s real though and pretty convinced it can’t be stopped. On the other hand, at some stage the planet would have done this, or the reverse an Ice Age, to itself without our help, as it does every 100,000 years or so. In the short term (next couple of centuries) it looks really messy for humanity. Huge movements of people as large chunks of the planet become intolerable to live on, most will die but will the survivors be allowed into the bits that can sustain life? And then we will all die out, or if we are lucky evolve into something else. And good riddance. In a couple of million years all that will be left is a couple of millimetres of plastic compressed between layers of rock. The visitors doing the digging to work out the history of the planet will be baffled as to how the plastic got to cover every square inch of the orb........*

Prime Ministerial? No, not in the conventional sense, but think Trump-light and perhaps it is. Corbyn is far left and getting only more extreme support. May is weak in the centre. Is Boris heading for alt-right?

Yes, the face coverings are difficult from a liberal perspective. But if there was a ban, it would also apply to the coverings of the Antifa's which would be another good thing imo. If you're not going to break the law at a demo, why cover your face?

Yes, I think global warming is real, it's the rate of decline I'm not sure about. 1976 was a scorcher after all. But in those days, we also had cold winters. Not something we see now. On the selfish side, I'm enjoying the weather but as a garden owner, would like a bit more rain.

Trump says that anyone who trades with Iran will be blocked from US trade. So Trump will block the whole EU from trade? He's insane.

For once I have been surprised by Trump (joking).
I don't like the way he now says his son met with the Russians? why didn't he mention it before? It's probably a storm in a tea cup but if he had nothing to hide why not say it when mentioned months ago?

On climate change....Whatever we do it will be pretty insignificant to the tens of thousands of chimneys pumping out crap 365 days a year in China and Japan. We all buy the stuff from them.

Wash your mouth out with soap and water. They will be our trading partners in a few months time so don't diss them for poisoning the planet. Them and the rust belt in America once Trump has managed to get the blast furnaces working again. Anyway I never had you down as just another yoghurt knitter. DT says it's all fake news.

Silly Boris he needs to realise you can't say this sort of stuff, whether you think it or not. SkyNews are all over it now. It will be payback for Brexit

I'd say Johnson is very likely positioning himself as the UK's alt-right hero. It wouldn't surprise me if his niqab outburst was a direct result of his meetings with Bannon. I don't actually disagree too much with what he said, and don't think it was Islamophobic in itself, but the 'letter-box' and 'armed robber' descriptions were definitely intended to inflame. Tommy Robinson will be proud.
