Met a cousin of mine for the first time and he's a similar age to me, his record collection was mind-blowing, over 2,000 vinyl albums from the late 60s through to early 80s many of which I had bought at that time but replaced with CD's,(I'm so f*cking jealous). Caught episode 3 of Rip It Up last night.... Rip It Up, Series 1: 3. DIY or Die: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0bdl6mn via @bbciplayer Superb episode with some top quality Indie tunes....sadly this was the final episode (the whole series is well worth catching). This week focussed on bands who set up their own labels away from the "London" scene, based in Glasgow, Edinburgh or Fife, and bands that changed the face of music......starting with some great JAMC....
Some of Kurt Cobain favourite bands were part of the indie scene in Glasgow - firstly, BMX Bandits....
Another band big locally hit the heights.... Hilarious interview with Sean Dickson from the band during the show.....when I'm Free hit the charts, they were invited to be on GMTV with Richard Keys & Lorraine Kelly - however, their management forgot to tell them so they went to a rave somewhere in London. Their boss finally got hold of them and got them to the studio, and they were off their faces on live morning TV!! Needless to say, their performance was noted and they were escorted off the premises by security, and banned for life
The arrival of Chemikal records bought Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton to our ears - still a regular in our house....
Slam set up SOMA records, and one of their first signings, in Paris, was..... Who then went on to worldwide stardom
