I know it’s a cover, but thanks to my sister going out with the local Mods, I was introduced to The Jam around 1978 and this is one of my favourites:
Jools Holland played piano on this song from Punk/ Experimental band, Alternative TV's debut album...
The Attractions were one of the great backing bands in Rock history, the Thomas's (Bruce and Pete, not related) rhythm section was superb with Pete's driving beat and Bruce's melodic basslines and then Steve Nieve's classically trained keyboards were truly exciting. Add this to EC's acerbic songs and sneering vocals and it was perfect for 1978!..
Now some Punk from the other side of the pond, these guys were regulars on the CBGB roster and were genuinely rowdy and a little bit violent...
Chic were all over the discos in the late 70s and the bass on this song from Bernard Edwards is superb. Nile Rodgers gets most of the plaudits but Edwards co-wrote and co-produced Chic's material...
American, Rachel Sweet was just 16 when she signed for Stiff Records and released this R&B cover of an Isaac Hayes written 60s song and the well recieved album, Fool Around...
Here you go Fats, this one is from Blondie's massive hit album, Parallel Lines which was the soundtrack for much of 1978 and spawned several hit singles too. This is one of the lesser recognised songs, but I love it for Robert Fripp's wonderful guitar breaks...
I prefer Japan's early Glam/NewWave material to their later Art Rock output, this is the title track from their debut album...
Here is the 1976 original version from LA Power Pop band The Nerves, prefer Debbie's slightly manic performance though...
