How much is Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Newcastle United target Joe Bryan worth and will he depart Bristol City? The Robins man is reportedly wanted by Premier League Burnley While entertaining a BBC Points West reporter out in Guernsey last summer Steve Lansdown claimed that Joe Bryan was worth some £10m. He was being asked in the wake of the Aden Flint saga but he gave what looked like an answer from the heart regarding Bryan as the 24-year-old left-back is a key part of the Bristol City squad and a Bristolian. A year on and it looks like that valuation is going to be tested as a number of clubs come calling for the former Backwell Athletic player. Earlier this year it was rumoured that £6m bid from Burnley was in the works - and now Fulham, AFC Bournemouth, Leeds United and Middlesbrough have all also shown interest in him. Newcastle have now been linked with a move for the star. We can add that Burnley scout Alan Crawford has regularly been in attendance at Ashton Gate to watch the flying full-back who also stands out statistically so much so that the WhoScored.com website - using Opta data - ranks Bryan in the top ten players in the league. We asked Lee Johnson at the end of the season about Bryan and the head coach admitted that he didn't want to lose such an important key cog of the Robins' machine but that there could be tough times ahead. It will come down to what Bryan wants himself. The opportunity to play at the highest level, in Europe and remunerated as such will have a bearing. As too what Lee Johnson and Mark Ashton say. Regarding price then, like clubs do, it would be pertinent to look at which left-sided defenders have been sold already and for what. That Bryan is believed to have only a year left on his contract - the last reported deal was through to 2019 - may twist the wings of the Robins. Indeed, with Lloyd Kelly needing to play more next year and Jamie Paterson and Callum O'Dowda further forward then arguably, City are already well catered for down the flank. An extra £8m to spend on a replacement or two might not be bad trading, in fact. This writer points out that EFL Championship team of the year player Scott Malone moved from Fulham to Huddersfiled last summer for a fee believed to be around £3.5m. Also Stephen Kingsley moved to Hull from Swansea for a similar amount. Better comparison players might be Andrew Robertson (reported £8m fee) to Liverpool, Aaron Cresswell to West Ham for a deal said to be worth around £5m and even Tyrone Mings who switched from Ipswich to Bournemouth for around £8m. While some like to shop in the cheaper markets abroad and look for value signings such as Marco Stiepermann at £1.5m and even Barry Douglas - one of the signings of the season - as the Scottish international was snapped up by Wolves for just over £1m from SuperLig side Konyaspor, Burnley do not appear to be one. The Lancashire side have previously bought Chris Wood and Charlie Taylor from Leeds so have a record of shopping from the second tier. Bryan is versatile, pacey, British - something of possible value - and is not going to cost a relatively huge amount. He once missed out on a Scotland U19 call-up because of concussion but admits to seeing himself as English instead. If he moved to Turf Moor the 24-year-old might compete against Charlie Taylor for the left-back spot but may also play at left wing with Dyche said to be an admirer of his functionality. “It’s hard for us to buy ‘the one’ who can walk straight into our team,” said Sean Dyche ahead of the Clarets' end-of-season with Stoke. “We have to look at a high level of development player – not necessarily someone for £100,000 to turn into a world beater – but the kind of market for us is a few million quid. “We can’t jump to £25million for people, five times over, we’ve got to look not just for the next six months but the six months after that, 18 months, 24 months, and that is tough. “But you have to keep looking and future proofing, getting the players in we think we can mould for the future. “Some of the ones we bought in the past, people said ‘why are they bringing them in?’ and they’re the ones who are now coming of age.” The PFA Community player of the Year appears to be next on the list. The City academy graduate may well have a big decision to make. How much might Bryan cost? The rising costs of Championship left backs Player - reported fee Scott Malone, £3.5m, Fulham to Huddersfield Aaron Cresswell - £5m, Ipswich to West Ham United Charlie Taylor - Free (out of contract; compensation of £6m reported), Leeds to Burnley Tyrone Mings - £8m, Ipswich to AFC Bournemouth Andrew Robertson - £8m, Hull to Liverpool Joe Bryan - £9m? The Sun reports Newcastle are preparing to offer £6m for him, my opinion he is worth at least £8m to £10m. https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/6834926/rafa-benitez-newcastle-mike-ashley-premier-league/
I would expect 7/8 million with add ons. But if Newcastle come calling he will be off. Huge club, great stadium and fan base.
Yes last time we played Newcastle we stayed there for the weekend stayed at the Hilton.Very lively It was.
The rumour list of interest for Joe Bryan grows longer ~ Premier League ~ Burnley, Fulham, Newcastle, Wolves, Bournmouth & Everton. Championship ~ Middlesbrough & Leeds. Bundesliga (Germany) Augsburg, Mainz & RB Leipzig. https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/718581/Transfer-news-Bristol-City-Joe-Bryan-three-Bundesliga-sides-Championship-Gossip-RB-Leipzig?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed: daily-star-football (Daily Star :: Football Feed) How long before he has gone and what do you believe, it's getting boring.
Similarly to Bobby Reid, seeing Bryan go would be sad, but also a bit of pride in a local lad come good. What wouldn't be good though would be if he was allowed to go for nothing in a years time. I imagine that the club have a strong idea of what figure they'd accept and hopefully by having many suitors they'll be someone willing to pay it to beat their rivals to him. It's similar to the Marriott situation, only we're on the other end and SL isn't posting twuntish tweets about it every five minutes!
With all the rumours flying around, coupled with some comments he was supposed to make, I just wish we could get whatever deal we can get for him and move on. If he should go then let's make it sooner rather than later so we can re-invest the monies received and perhaps be able to finalise the team in the next week or so prior to the start of the new season.
He's a bright lad with well educated parents. He will undoubtedly see the financial benefits to him in running down his contract and getting a huge signing on fee. Have a bad feeling we might be about to get done over on this one. Hope I'm wrong as would like to be wishing him well rather than cursing him when he goes.
Totally agree Mike, just get as much as we can without trying to hang out for a few extra bucks , the quicker we can get this done the quicker we can look to get a replacement and allow him time to train with the team before the s adorn starts .
