Very valid and for me very much to be regretted.
The days when, if I was up on leave I would go to St James Park if we were away, quite happy to be seen as a Sunderland fan and feeling quite safe, are long gone.

Yet we have more in common with our near neighbours than anyone else.
Our history, culture and accents are so closely aligned that the only people who can see any difference is ourselves.
One of my earliest memories is watching a cup final at an uncles on his new, tiny, black and white TV, in the early 50's.
The whole family were packed into the room and all rooting for N/C, because they were like us.
    They were local.

The NE stuck on the top corner of England has always had it rough and had to rely on ourselves.
Against each outer we were rivals yes, but it was us against the rest when it came to the rest of the country.

With the transfer window closing in a little over three weeks - Thursday 9th August at 5pm to be precise - it’s clear that there is an awful lot of work to do on the Sunderland squad, both in terms of incoming and outgoings.

As far as incomings are concerned, Roker Report understands that Sunderland have had a bid accepted for a Championship midfielder and the club are currently talking personal terms with the player. If those talks go smoothly, we may have a resolution to that deal in the near future.

The club are still waiting to hear from Bradford City about their bid for Charlie Wyke, and they are hopeful that a deal can be reached to bring the striker to the Stadium of Light. The 25-year-old had a good season in League One last season, scoring 15 goals and providing eight assists.

There are still a few players on high wages that the club need to shift before the window closes, and although the transfer window shuts on August 31st elsewhere in Europe, it’s hoped that those players will be moved on before the domestic window closes.

Wahbi Khazri is on the verge of completing his move to Saint-Etienne. The Tunisian international completed his medical with the Ligue 1 side last week, but a slight hold-up in his discussions with Les Verts means that the deal won’t be completed until tomorrow.

Yep, but you only need to see the way money is distributed around the region to see why any past relationships within the region have become fractured. As far as I can see only Newcastle and Darlington have enough cash not to let their society crumble. Sunderland, Hartlepool, Stanley, Bishop, Aycliffe ect. ****ing ****holes for no other reason than years of capitol neglect. All they have in common stands for nothing when there's nothing in common anymore. Think that's the big difference between Newcastle and Sunderland these day. They're not in the same boat anymore, it's like different worlds bouncing between the two. I mean according to google Newcastle has the smaller population. Not that you'd tell from the investment each town gets.

He seems to have lost his place to David Meyler, Reading fans rate him as a solid defensive midfielder, he can be a bit dodgy at centre-back but a lot of fans are not happy about losing him.
The strange thing is that the Reading team (including Evans) have flown out to Austria for pre-season tour this morning.

Sunderland have had a bid accepted for Reading midfielder George Evans. In an attempt to find out just how good he is, we spoke to our friends over at Reading Fansite ‘The Tilehurst End’ - and they’ve given him a fairly sound endorsement.

RR: So - George Evans. What’s he like?

TE: A hard-working, honest pro. As far as character goes, he’s one of the quieter players you’ll come across in the game - he’s rarely put up by the club to talk to the press and isn’t too talkative on social media.

He’s got no attitude problems that we’ve heard of, so he’ll be a far cry from some of the… ahem.. unreliable players that you’ve had at the Stadium of Light in recent years.

RR: Why do you think Reading are allowing him to leave?

TE: We’ve got too many central midfielders basically. Even with him leaving - in addition to at least another four departures from that position this summer - there are too many names for Paul Clement to pick from. He’s not properly nailed down regular football in his two and a half years at Reading (despite 30 odd games in 2016/17) and was overlooked by both Jaap Stam and Clement last season. With all of that in mind, the reported ‘six figure fee’ for a player out of contract in 2019 is good business.

RR: What’s his best role in the team?

TE: Playing deep in front of the back four, although it’s still not obvious whether he’s better sitting there on his own or in a double pivot - you could use him in either role to be honest.

He certainly can’t play higher up the pitch, but he does do a good job slotting into the defence. Evans has gone into the central spot in a back three on occasion, although you could just about get away with playing him as a centre half.

RR: Sunderland need athletic players, particularly in midfield. Would you say that Evans was that sort of player?

TE: He’s got stamina rather than outright pace or strength. You can expect him to cover a lot of ground in the midfield, which he did expertly in the play-off semi-final games against Fulham in 2017.

Stam gave him the job of man-marking Tom Cairney across the pitch in both games - suffice to say that you’d have been forgiven for not noticing that Cairney was playing.

RR: What would you say his strengths were?

TE: He doesn’t really excel at any one thing to be honest, but his stamina and tactical awareness are good, and he also shows commendable character and work-rate.

    RR: And his weaknesses?

TE: For a deep-lying midfielder, he doesn’t influence the game enough either on the ball or defensively.

When in possession, he doesn’t dictate the play that well as his passing range seems to be pretty basic.

Similarly, he’s not always that imposing as a screen in front of the defence, both physically and with sometimes sloppy positioning.

RR: For any sunderland supporter doubting this piece of business, what would you say to them?

TE: When it comes to replacing Paddy McNair, which I presume is what you’re trying to do with this signing, you probably couldn’t do too much better than getting George Evans.

Some of my previous comments may have seemed harsh, but you’ve got to take them in the context of a player who’s not had regular game time in the Championship.

At League One level he’s more than capable of developing into a very solid midfielder - he just needs that first team experience to hone his all-round game. He’s got the potential, and at a transfer fee of less than £1 million you’ve got a bargain.

If you asked me to predict his development at Sunderland, I’d say that he’s likely to fit in at the club well, adapt to League One nicely, and be a good option for you when you come back up.

^^^ that's the least inspiring review of a player I've ever read. Hope the guy they interviewed had just been left by his wife on the morning of that interview or something.

I think he sounds alright, at our level a safe pair of hands who runs his backside off every game will do for me. Plus he's only 23 with plenty of time to develop and he's already scored more goals than Cattermole has in his entire career so maybe not as much of a donkey going forward as this guy makes out.

There seems to be a theme here as our manager is looking to bring in young hungry players who possibly have a point to prove by coming here.
We've had loads of old knackers playing for us over the past few seasons so it's time to give the young ones a chance.
Just hope the fans show enough patience and give Ross the chance to get his brand new charges together. Here's hoping.

Aye - you know I was one of his fans undoubtedly - he was every bit a decent PL Defensive mid a few years ago but injuries have been awful to him! Said the other day he should be able to boss the league we're in now - but a number of us (me included) thought that last season too!! You don't need to be super quick to play as a DM (the amount of people I saw who said he was crap because someone out paced him when our full back had wandered away and left a massive gap and Cattermole tried to cover it) - it's unreal - it'#s not his fault he's slow - actually really not his fault he's not very good either if the gaffers keep picking him. He apparently got a tirade of abuse at Pools the other night from some sections of fans. Can;t understand what they hope to gfain from doing that personally - certainly won't be good for the team

I've just looked this guy up and his goal scoring record is prolific. He's scored bags of goals everywhere he's been.

    From Keith Downie Twitter:

Sunderland improved bid in for striker Charlie Wyke, in region of £600,000. Bolton also remain keen. Meanwhile Wahbi Khazri has completed his move to St Etienne this afternoon. Oviedo & N’dong close to the exit door, too.

Sunderland are to battle Peterborough United and Portsmouth for Cheltenham Town striker Mo Eisa. The Black Cats have made a bid of at least £1million for the in-demand striker, who is also wanted by Championship clubs.

Sunderland are in the market for at least two strikers before the transfer window closes, with Sunderland also lodging bids for Bradford City striker Charlie Wyke.

Both Posh and Pompey have had bids rejected for Eisa in the past week.

News of the bid was first revealed by Roker Report and sources close to Cheltenham have since confirmed to the Echo that they value their prize asset at the £1.5million mark.

The Echo understands Sunderland's bid is at least £1million but it is not yet clear whether that is all up front or whether it is enough to tempt Cheltenham, who are under no pressure to sell this summer.

The Sudan-born striker is contracted to Cheltenham until 2020.

Peterborough's most recent offer was worth £1million. That included clauses over a period of time, while Pompey have now tabled three separate bids but none of those were close to Cheltenham's valuation.

The striker joined the club from Greenwich Borough last summer and scored 25 times in League Two. He won the club's supporters' and players' player of the year awards.

Speaking at the weekend, Cheltenham boss Gary Johnson said: "The thing with Mo at the moment is that everybody is interested, but they are not offering his worth.

"As far as the club is concerned, as long as Mo and his representative understand, he will get there, but he is our crown jewel at the moment. He is still enjoying his game and his finishing is unbelievable.

"I know the going rate for proper goalscoring strikers. We have to keep calm and if he doesn’t go in this window then we’ll keep him, but he’s worth what we’d have to take for him.

"He’ll be worth double that when he cracks it in the Championship."

Meanwhile, Sunderland are expected to face strong competition from Bolton Wanderers for striker target Charlie Wyke.

Both clubs are in desperate need of reinforcements up front, though Bolton are yet to make a bid for the Bradford City striker.

Jack Ross has identified Wyke as one of his key targets with the Black Cats making an initial bid last week.

It comes as Bradford are considering giving Wyke a deadline to decide on his future.

With just a year left on his current contract, Bradford want Wyke to commit himself to a new deal, but if not, then they would be willing to sell him, at the right price.

Middlesbrough-born Wyke didn’t play in the friendly with York City at the weekend, he sat out with a knock.

Bradford head coach Michael Collins has praised Wyke’s attitude despite the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future.

Collins told the Telegraph & Argus: “Everybody is aware of the interest. It’s quite common within the press.

“I haven’t heard anything directly from the chairman with regards to what’s happening with Charlie.

“But credit to Charlie. He has come in and applied himself exactly as I thought he would.

“I knew Charlie before I took the role on. I expected nothing different and I’ve seen nothing different. He’s been an absolute grade A professional and I expected nothing different.”

Wyke is also understood to be high on Bolton’s wanted list.

Speaking about his transfer priorities, boss Phil Parkinson said: “Everybody knows we’re a long, long way short of having a squad capable of competing at Championship level.

“We’ve got other areas we need to strengthen but the striker area is a key one. We need strength in depth.”
