Watching the races at York yesterday, I am wondering if they have done something wrong with the watering of the track – they were struggling even in the sprints, so perhaps there are false patches. A very long time ago the then clerk of the course John Smith was almost legendary for ruining the Ebor meeting by turning the taps on and it then raining. No rain in the forecast for Saturday but I think I may give the John Smith’s Cup card a miss – the Tadcaster sponsors unrelated to the former clerk. Last year, Boris Mandzukic was telling us that Caravaggio was a “steering job” for the July Cup at the end of Royal Ascot, so Harry Angel beat Limato and Brando. Two of those three are back this year, with little chance of going any better if their odds and recent performances are the only measure. It seems that Ballydoyle have finally accepted that U S Navy Flag does not stay and dropped back to sprinting but it is hard to make a case for him on three year old form. Aussie raider Redkirk Warrior disappointed in the Diamond Jubilee so how do we make a case for him when two of the outsiders here finished in front of him there? Blue Point has obvious claims after his King’s Stand win and he is effective at both five and six furlongs; however, he is 0-2 at Newmarket. Hanagan left it too late on SANDS OF MALI in the Commonwealth Cup and failed to catch Eqtidaar having raced in the stands’ side group. The winner did not exactly keep a straight line and has to be feared if he does here. Invincible Army and Sioux Nation were both behind that day and I expect Fahey will have had words with Hanagan to make sure he tracks the lead group today. Fahey seems suitably ebullient in his Sporting Life column about me getting my Ascot losses back, although he thinks they have a poor draw again. In the Bunbury Cup cavalry charge, I cannot be having the favourite Gilgamesh on the strength of seventh in the Wokingham, although he won a valuable York race over this trip the time before. There seem to be a lot of runners with no recent form so I am going with SPANISH CITY, beaten favourite in a different valuable York race last time. In the 3yo handicap at 3:20, I really like Roger Varian’s Ibraz, the favourite on a hat-trick, but Hamdan’s jockey never wins for me. If only Dane O’Neill was on it...
I think that old rogue Ellsworth is gonna have a good day today speculative bid in the bunbury for me and master the world over at York.
3.25 Newton Abbot Tempestatefloresco has his ground and with the lads 10 lbs is below his last winning chase mark. Been backed this morning too, in from 8s to 6s.
