to be honest I talk to my cat cos the kids and their mum put her on the rota...they figured that it would lessen their time having to listen to me droning on.

 

That explains a lot. I have the feeling that the cat talks back?

ok @Matth_2014 the sensible explanation is that pets are shown to be very good companions.

They are used with children and adults who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties and with people who have serious and or long term physical health issues.

Some specialist schools use dogs to listen to children reading as some children prefer to do that than to read to an adult. It has shown a massive improvement in the reading and comprehension skills of the children involved.

Animals are also used to help people with learning disabilities learn various social skills.

Stroking and holding a pet has been shown to decrease stress and the same is true of people chatting to their pets.

None of this means you should stop finding it weird but maybe it will help you understand why telling complete strangers on the net that you think it's weird will lead to you getting some grief.

It ain't as though it is offensive or abusive so maybe it's best to keep a negative opinion about the non ****ty behaviour of others to yourself.

Matth do you ever talk to yourself? Like when others have popped out and maybe you're deciding what to have for tea or something? Talking to animals is similar except you've got a blank face staring back at you so it's just like talking to my wife.

 

I find it weird that people talk to their pets, It’s strange in my opinion.

 

Last night I told my dog to sit as he was being a ****, and he did. He is better at listening than most humans

my last one recognised what level of trouble it was in by which swear word i used.

 

Matth something i know is that in criminal psychology, it is widely believed that people who harm their pets are also likely to harm humans in a similar manner.

So maybe the same applies with talking to pets, if you find that strange, maybe you have difficulty engaging with humans.
