I cannot summon up any enthusiasm for the small fields at Windsor today; and over at The Curragh, the Ballydoyle bandwagon is probably going to dominate most of the small fields there. Curiously, I have not yet had word from my mate about Pallasator’s chances in the Curragh Cup (5:15) – perhaps that means they do not fancy it eight days after Royal Ascot.

Over at Saint Cloud, Bateel is a non-runner in the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud, so that will probably see Andre Fabre’s Waldgeist go off as the jolly. Silvestre De Sousa partners Salouen again after his near upset of Cracksman at Epsom and he may try to set the fractions as there is unlikely to be any other pace in a typical French-run race. However, the most interesting runner in the race has to be John Gosden’s filly CORONET, looking for Group 1 glory after an easy win at York – Frankie will not be letting De Sousa slip the field.

Finally heard from my mate and they fancy the follow-up even on eight days rest. As I do not follow day-to-day Irish racing, I have no idea about the jockey:

    THE CURRAGH 5-15: PALLASATOR

He might be one of the best jockeys in Europe but today he was an also-ran because horses win races. I know which place he is going... <doh>

Not so sure that the distance was the issue – the horse has won over 1m 6fur before when it was trained by Prescott. I would not say that the opposition were better – he was second top rated, one pound behind Twilight Payment. As every horse in the race could have run in a 0-110 handicap, it was a Group 2 race in name only. Giving a stone to the three year olds was going to be a tall order.

Much more likely is that the race came too soon after Royal Ascot. He made his own traffic trouble and once the horse started giving out the distress signals, he dropped his hands. Nothing else he could do.

For once, Ryan Moore picked the right one from Ballydoyle and it was not the favourite. The favourite had run behind Old Persian at Royal Ascot and that one hardly advertised the form on Saturday.

The winner Flag Of Honour was another one from that "totally meaningless" French Derby.

4 horses who finished midfield have run from it so far, they have won a G3 and G2 and 2nd in a G2 and G1
