Pre-2006 they had earned a reputation for being workmanlike. I remember watching them in 2006 though and thinking how exciting they were, probably the most dynamic and energetic team in the competition. Since then they've mostly been based on talented and/or speedy players with great technical ability and yet people still lazily refer to them as a workmanlike team. Honestly if you put Brazil shirts on half of them the very same players would be talked about in a very different way. Glad they're out. Not because they're Germany but because they are better than us and they and Brazil were meant to be one of our opponents for the Quarter finals. I'll be cheering all the underdogs on as it's the only hope we have!!
I've had to upscale my opinion of our team. I think that we're a bit better than that. Ok, so we've beaten Tunisia and Panama - that doesn't make us world beaters - there are tougher challenges. But we're not going out on penalties to Germany. That actually was my worst fear. It's now about fine margins and I honestly feel that we've got a reasonable chance of going further. Who knows though? Good luck England!!
