Maybe there is a good one in Iran or Mexico? The British game used to produce lots of creative midfielders, from Johnny Haynes to Alan Ball, Billy Bremner, Glenn Hoddle, Ray Wilkins but it seems as if the supply has stopped, and is akin to that of manufacturing vehicles by British companies.

 

We’ve had good one since then, just not used them correctly. Michael Carrick should have been a mainstay of the national team.

Totally agree. Instead we had the Gerrard/Lampard creamfest and overlooked the better option.

I’d like England to use Loftus-Cheek in midfield instead of Henderson, he is a bit more ‘Lemina’ than Carroll though.

And this is where we have to learn from previous mistakes - selling sane on the cheap early on - before we understand the market going rate in a transfer window. If an average player is going to command £20m we dont want to be selling someone like bertrand early doors for 15m. I dont trust the clubs judgement in this regard .

 

The only real hope I have for this World Cup is that we just try something a bit different; this team has got the ability to be very vanilla if certain players are picked, but I just hope we end going for something a little bit more interesting....

Hate to speak ill of the dead, but putting Ray Wilkins and creative in the same sentence is a bit steep.

Mane was sold before the new TV deal came in though. That would easily add another £10 million or more to his price.

 

There's no question in my mind that we'd get for Mane today than back then.

But equally, Newcastle sold Sissoko that same summer and got almost the same price as we did. Mane compared to Sissoko... And that's before you consider that we had just finished 6th, and Newcastle has just been relegated.

 

Not for most of his career he didn’t. He was available and selected, but was mostly over looked due to the Gerrard/Lampard debate. I’d have had him ahead of both of those as first on the team sheet.

 

Ah, someone who understands the non-flashy footballer. I saw West Ham at United in a cup game when Cole, Lampard and Carrick were making waves as three young players to watch. Carrick was better than most players on the pitch and even matched the great Paul Scholes. Even though he was only a kid, you could see he had the football brain many lack. My Man U mates always raved about him.
