Right, I have to do my personal statement for uni, and on the recommendation of Vaux I have created this thread for anybody who may have any pearls of wisdom to give me. I'm not that good at writing bullshit, and I have 4000 characters to fill. Help, please?
Just say you don't like repeating yourself about 800 times. p.s. lying helps a lot mate with these things
Shame the reps gone or we'ed have made you fully loaded, after all couldn't fail to be impressed with massive rep from an internet forum. Watch the ideas flood in mate. Should give you some ideas, after all quite a few people will have done what your about to do, so you should get some good ideas.
Just go basic mate likes, dislikes, interests, why you chose that particular Uni and course what drove you to go for your chosen career path. Don't go political unless you really want to and make sure you praise the Uni to high heaven quality of facilities and quantity of fit birds.
I am a 17 year old resident of Jersey, avid sports fan and devout catholic. That said I am well travelled and multi lingual having spent time in xxxx, xxxx, xxxx and have never let my faith close my mind, be judgmental or preach that my way is right and everyone else is wrong. Then expand and tell them about you
believe I have excellent academic drive enjoy being an active participant in lectures things like that for general waffle, you also want to go more into why that field / what interests you in that area of study etc. do you know what you are going to be applying for? law? engineering? science etc ? I first became interested in <blah blah blah> and on so
Food mate they all do good food there's another slant on your choice of course, there's also being surrender monkeys although that probably won't go down too well, I'd stick with food oh forgot fit birds.
embellish on any trips you have taken to the relevant places in that case always been fascinated by linguistics etc maybe talk a little about the variance in syntax and rhythm of the various languages to show a knowledge base of your subject matter. anyway, 9.15pm here gotta sort some scran out, good luck fella
Here a few things I think they will be looking for: Why do you want to study at University Why are you interested in studying modern languages? Have you any experience in speaking the langiuage in the countries of interest - e.g. school trips abroad, exchange visits, holidays etc Communication skills - written and oral (not sure if not606 counts)- any summer jobs where these were developed Positions of responsibility - e.g. team captain, head boy, organiser of a society, assistant manager of a bar/shop etc Team working - again anything work related or from involvement in societies Time management and organisational skills - Unis see these as very important Outside interests - try to tie them into the headings above What do you want to do with your degree - the old where do you see yourself in 5 five years time question - this is not the time to say in a bar in Spain waiting to watch Barcelona vs Sunderland in the Champions league semi final! Hope this helps
"I am a devout believer in an outdated archaic religion, that has still to arrive in the 21st century. I am quite willing to go out on a limb to defend my faith as everyone believes in something I believe in this. My religion is based on an unshakable faith in my belief in God, this belief was stronger in the past for a large number of people. My other unshakable belief is in SAFC, once again the belief in this mighty deity may have been stronger outside of the NE in times past, but as the years go on the belief outside of the NE is growing. Living on Jersey I have quite a lot of experience of the French, those cheese eating surrender monkeys. Italians I can just about live with, as my faiths home office is there. Spain is where my crush a moderator from the Sunderland forum I frequent has moved too, it's also a canny place to holiday.
To be honest mate the best thing you can do is get good grades - then Unis will come looking for you - especially next year!
I did French and Italian at university, but can't remember having to write 4000 words of bullshit! However, ExSeahamLad has come up trumps, if I had to do it all again I'd follow his advice!
Jersey, writings actually a bit of a speciality of mine and I recently did a personal statement myself. If you want me to proof read/tweak it when you're done I'd be happy to. Also, remember to sell yourself and not the course, show enthusiasm for the subject and try to convey yourself as a well rounded individual.
Jersey, hope this gives some inspiration. http://www.tejvan.co.uk/funny/funny_university_application/index.html
Do like I have recommended many other students to do 'buy one off the shelf' for about 50$, then turn it into UK english..sorted
