Aston Villa striker Lewis Grabban wants to escape the spectre of Sunderland's relegation with promotion on Saturday. The 30-year-old started the season on loan at the Stadium of Light before making another temporary switch to Villa Park from Bournemouth in January.

He is likely to spearhead Villa's charge in Saturday's Sky Bet Championship play-off final against Fulham just five months after staring at relegation with the Black Cats.

He cut short his 12-goal spell in the north east and scored eight times for Villa to finish as the division's second top scorer with 20.

Without him Sunderland tumbled into League One after a second straight relegation and Grabban wants to complete a personal turnaround with promotion to the Premier League.

"Hopefully the relegation won't go down too much on my record," he said. "I have tried to get away from that.

"But it happens, I don't think anyone thought at the beginning of the season that Sunderland could do that.

"I certainly didn't. They're in a semi-transitional phase and they need to start again and get back to where they probably should be.

"They're similar in terms of Villa. You can't put your finger on it, why it went wrong. With their relegation, it was the inevitable happened.

"Everyone expected it after a certain amount of time. It didn't look like anything was going to change."

He did his bit when he was with us

Disappointed by his exit, but that's how it goes when you loan players in

    What a ****ing prick.

Him trying to get away from it is a major contributing factor in us going down. Very much on his record.

He may have scored goals, but his lack of work ethic and failure to track back cancelled all of them out.
He was/is one of the reasons that we went down whether he likes it or not, the prick.

I honestly hope that Saturday is only the start of his disappointments in what is left of his career, a grade one arse-hole. Come on Fulham.

Echo all sentiments on here - if he had the bottle to stay and fight instead of landiing us in the **** we might have scored the goals to stay up.

He's up there with Darren Bent for me! Complete prick

Whether Villa get back in The Prem or not, it will be interesting to see if they make a move for him on a permanent transfer.
My guess is that IF Villa do get back up it will be a no.
If they are in the Ch/Sp next Season, YES.

I wonder if his car has been fixed yet?

He’s one of those weak people who only want in if things go well - ride along with the success of others, but run rather than help if it’s not good

I'm surprised at some of the comments about him tbh.

He'd only been with us a few months. He was on loan. Either him or the club got a better offer. Doesn't matter.

He was never our player. He owed us nothing.

Heart was never in it. His game is machanical, he seems to have no personality either on or off the pitch, he doesn't give a **** about us. I'm just returning his sentiments. Happy to forget he's ever existed and couldn't give a toss where his career goes.

He left the first opportunity he got in Jan and drove down south to find a new club.
He betrayed his fellow team mates halfway through battle. He was a forgotten man before we took him in August and as soon as his name started being recognised again he jumped ship for his own selfish needs.

My mate warned me about his personality from when he played at Millwall about 6 years ago. He told me he's a fecking ar$ehole and he certainly lived up to it.

If I were to list the reasons Sunderland went down last season he wouldn't make the top 20.

As a loan player he did his bit, compared to most other players brought in for the Championship I'd argue he was the best. You didn't loan him to be a nice guy, you loaned him to score goals - and he did.

I don't know why he made the comment about wanting to distance himself from the relegation but the rest of his comments were fair enough to be honest. Comparing you guys to Villa is something I'd agree with regarding manner of relegation and expectations for the following couple of years.

What a prick! Fair dos going somewhere else in my opinion, and he did score goals for us, but wanting to distance himself cos we went down is a bit much. If he wasn't such a plum he could see that he revitalised his career with us, it was a positive time at Sunderland and both sides did what was expected, but no, he's ****ing Messi or something and we've tarnished his impeccable career for when kids look back at it on Wikipedia in 50 years. Aye right. What a cock. I will never speak of you again Mr Grabban you twat, consider youself distanced :emoticon-0148-yes:

Top scorer leaving half way through the season is a pretty big reason. Admittedly I'd blame short/bain/Coleman's tactics ahead of him but in a vacuum I'd say he's comfortably in the top five reasons.
