Been listening to one of my favourite solo performers - Neil Diamond. One of his songs has the following lyrics: 'Don't you know, girl, you'll be a woman soon Please, come take my hand Girl, you'll be a woman soon Soon, you'll need a man.' I think that's pretty much called grooming nowadays and gets you some prison time when you're caught. Also listened to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon and 'Lunatic'. Suspect Mental Health charities would not be happy with that if it were released to today. Benny Hill - all of it!! So a few questions. 1. Do you have other examples of "ok" then but not now? 2. Has society progressed or are we just more controlled? 3. Is freedom of expression being eroded? 4. Has political correctness gone too far and simply reducing everything (perhaps everyone?) to a boring shade of grey? Thanks Neil. Love your music but won't be singing that one too often!!
1. Can pick many a sitcom, Mind your Language, Alf Garnet etc etc. Certain sayings which were common place e.g you thieving Arab! 2&3 & 4 think there is element of all Of this, some people now find offence on behalf of people that wouldn’t be offended leading to an element of political correctness overkill so freedom of expression reduced for fear of offending. There are probably quite a few dodgy lyrics out there in songs!
Always been a huge ND fan............. saw him here in Oz, Brisbane Entertainment Centre, 91 l think. 1. Do you have other examples of "ok" then but not now? (70's Aussie Band) Skyhooks - You Just Like Me Cos I'm Good In Bed 2. Has society progressed or are we just more controlled? We've become too smart for our own good. 3. Is freedom of expression being eroded? Yes. 4. Has political correctness gone too far and simply reducing everything (perhaps everyone?) to a boring shade of grey? Completely.
1. Do you have other examples of "ok" then but not now? There are hundreds - songs, tv shows, films, books, the lot. Blazing Saddles would never get made today, for example. 2. Has society progressed or are we just more controlled? 3. Is freedom of expression being eroded? 4. Has political correctness gone too far and simply reducing everything (perhaps everyone?) to a boring shade of grey? 2/3/4 is far too simplistic an approach to the situation. However: 2. Yes, society has progressed, however individuals have failed to follow. 3. The consequences of freedom of expression are more understood. You quite rightly can't racially abuse someone and then defend your use of the N-word as 'freedom of expression'. 4. What you call 'political correctness', others would call respect and decency. One example: the attitudes towards sexualising women in the street was rife in the 60s and 70s, but isn't acceptable now. You can't act the way you did and expect a woman who's been followed down the street, shouted at and touched, to be OK with it because 'men are like that'. If people find that difficult to follow, then the problem is with them, not with society. And when people with those attitudes get into power, the need to stand against it is even greater (yes, I AM referring to the US President here).
Bloody hell why don't we just erase all history and conform to the new politically correct society that some desire. What a load of old yoghurt knitting. I would never think that Young Girl by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap or Save all your kisses for me Brotherhood of man were anything other than a catching tune back in the day. Seriously, soon we will all live in bubbles being monitored by the thought police. Bring on the new season!

The Stranglers track ‘Feel like a Wog’ always made me feel a bit nervy......my black mates at the time had no problem with its lyrics as they were meant to be anti racist......just didn’t seem right then....and can’t see it getting played much now.
Here is the Young girl lyrics. I have just had a quick read of the song and it seems that the bloke is acting responsible by telling her she is too young for him so go away. How is it disturbing? I think we read too much into things. Young girl, get out of my mind My love for you is way out of line Better run girl You're much too young girl With all the charms of a woman You've kept the secret of your youth You led me to believe you're old enough To give me love And now it hurts to know the truth Chorus Beneath your perfume and your make-up You're just a baby in disguise And though you know that it's wrong to be Alone with me That come on look is in your eyes Chorus So hurry home to your mama I'm sure she wonders where you are Get out of here Before I have the time To change my mind 'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far Young girl, get out my mind My love for you is way out of line Better run girl You're much too young girl (repeat to fade)
Here is the Save all your kisses for me lyrics. It's an innocent song about a father finding it hard to leave his daughter because he has to go to work, yet some have tried to say it could mean something different because of the last lyrics (in bold). This is totally wrong and stupid. Though it hurts to go away It's impossible to stay But there's one thing I must say before I go I love you you know I'll be thinking of You in most everything I do Now the time is moving on And I really should be gone But You keep me hanging on for one more smile I love you all the while With your cute little way Will You promise that you'll save your Kisses for me Save all your kisses for me Bye bye baby bye bye Don't cry honey don't cry Gonna walk out the door But I'll soon be back for more Kisses for me Save all your kisses for me So long honey so long Hang on baby hang on Don't You dare me to stay Cause You know I'll have to say That I've got to work each day And that's why I go away But I count the seconds till I'm home with You I love you it's true You're so cute honey, gee Won't you save them up for me, your Kisses for me Save all your kisses for me Bye bye baby bye bye Don't cry honey don't cry Gonna walk out the door But I'll soon be back for more Kisses for me Save all your kisses for me So long honey so long Hang on baby hang on Don't you dare me to stay 'Cause you know You've got to save your Kisses for me Save all your kisses for me Bye bye baby bye bye Don't cry honey don't cry Won't You save them for me Even though you're only three..
Although I can't guarantee that when he says "That I've got to work each day. And that's why I go away" That he is not a serial killer.
Or a flipside of that is he clearly has the hots for a girl he recognises as a child and if she hangs around any longer he's going to change his mind and sh#g her. Either way it's still a bit yuck but twas a different time and sensibilities change.
On the flip side he could be as old as Mick Jagger so the girl could be a young 60 yrs old as he doesn't specify. I also think that you can turn any song or lyric into something else depending how you analyze or interpret it. However I agree it comes from a different era.
What about the episode The Queen of Spain's Beard in the first Blackadder series which was repeated on 'Yesterday' this week. He ends up 'marrying' a girl who is no older than 10 years old and the final scene sees them sleeping in the same room, albeit in separate beds.
You are spot on really society has progressed, equality whilst not there is something correctly in my opinion being strived for. You'll get people loosing their minds saying can't do this can't do that, it's political correctness gone mad, when you are right it's just common decency and not being a ****. If this approach was taken throughout history women would never have got the vote, slavery would still be happening, homosexuals would be sent to prison and we'd be sticking kids up chimneys! In their early days moving forward/away from the above got objections and similar outrage. If a man wants to be a woman and identified of something I've never heard of, so ****ing what? Doesn't effect me at all so why would I give a ****? I'm glad that it's not seen as acceptable for men to sexually assault women, however if you go to a nightclub it still happens all the time. With regards to some of the songs being now seen as a touch iffy, Pricilla was underage when she got with Elvis and let's not forget about Jerry Lee Lewis wife/cousin the 13 year old. Is it political correctness gone mad when people object to marrying your 13 year old cousin?
You raise an interesting point about transcultural considerations. Some years ago, a friend from New Zealand announced her husband was ill with a - word that some said was a three letter acronym that allegedly stood for Western Oriental Gentleman. Apparently in NZ it simply meant a virus. Suspect there are many other instances of transcultural potential mischief.
