Right, everyone, surprisingly I'm off to Kempton on Wednesday evening, as I'm in the area on a training course. Anything you want to tell me about will be appreciated, including any insights you may have about the racecourse, the area etc. Thanks.
Most interesting runner of the morrow has to be The Lieutenant’s Palixandre who debuts for the barn at Southwell in the ‘lucky last’ (8.35). A €100,000 purchase he’s owned by the heir to the biscuit tin fortune, Rich Richtea. At this stage you’d say he seems to be worth that purchase price as his half-sister won a Listed race, on the level, back in ’16. Tomorrow’s contest won’t be the ‘be all and end all’ for Palixandre but I’m sure The Lieutenant will be keen to get off to a good start for his ‘freshman’ owner. Furthermore, the yard know how to win the race having won the contest in ’17. This is the first time that the heir to the biscuit tin fortune (or his wife who’s colours, of course, Palixandre will don) has owned a beast outright in The Lieutenant’s barn although a couple of terms ago he did own one in partnership – although that didn’t exactly prove newsworthy. Boom, boom! You would guess that Palixandre’s main rival would be from the county and a most strong one. Newtown Boy, who also cost €100,000, was made a very warn favourite on debut, last month, and ran a promising race to be runner-up. This looks solid form as the 3rd home (Colonel Custard) won a 15 runner bumper at the weekend. Newtown Boy also demands further respect as he has a Lieutenant in his lineage - he’s a half-brother to none other than Lieutenant Gruber! I’m sure at least one chap from across the Irish Sea, never heard of him so can’t actually name check the old top, will be watching on anxiously because to quote that well know racing phrase, ‘You can’t beat perfection and Her Majesty’s favourite military man is most certainly that and after you’ve had one barned at Seven Barrows anywhere else seems sadly lacking’. Runs off the old tongue that doesn’t it and its hardly surprising that it’s the racing equivalent of dear, dear Sir Brucie’s rendition of ‘nice to see you to see you…NICE’ and ‘good game, good game’. I had a salad in the canteen, to which I added a tine of tuna which I brought from home. 10/10 for freshness, creativity and taste.
No real change to the old status quo, I’m afraid. Still somewhat on the chunky side. Shame really as me holding back that point is preventing so many 10/10’s.
15:45 Warwick - Nietzsche e/w (No apparent form but the Brian Ellison-trained gelding contested much better races than this last season. Hopefully will show a lot of improvement in today's event. No, no, no, no, no, old boy. Cor blimey I was so shocked when I read this request I had to go and lie down in the sick bay for half an hour. Where is your sense of history and tradition?!? In the old days of the ‘Daily Thread’ it was almost nothing but what people were eating for their lunch and then subsequently how it ranked. Horse racing talk on the ‘Daily Thread’ was the interloper in those days. We need to get back to more luncheon chat in my opinion not less. Nothing grand for me today though as I’ll be searching for a quiet corner, later on, to read the ‘Weekender’. Just a sandwich and a bucket of water for me, I expect.
Well alright, Sir Barney, if it's that important, please forget my request (which the hon. moderators already have anyway). We don't eat a main meal until after 5 pm, but for what it's worth, have made myself a couple of bread rolls with sliced ham and some goat's cheese on top, liberally sprinkled with Tabasco and choice black pepper. All washed down with a Spezial ale of course. At least I make you say no, no, no, no, no, most of the time! (If you can't beat 'em, join 'em?).
Just to follow up on the lunch theme I've just had a chicken and chorizo salad with roasted red peppers and a super ranch dressing. Knockout stuff I'll tell you... Definitely a 10/10 score...
Totally agree with Swanny regarding the chances of Nietzsche this afternoon at Warwick with the young Frost lady onboard. Dangers abound in that field however so a modest ew punt at 8/1. Totally agree with SBC however re luncheon activities remaining within the DT (I should be a Liberal Democrat MP!). I have a fairly standard egg mayo sarnie and plain crisps (Walkers of course). However I have a delevoped a bit of an addiction to the maple syrup and pecan slices on offer from my local cafe so have supplemented my lunchtime ration with one of those little beauties. Luverly. 7/10 for the sarnie/crisps and a golden ticket for the slice.
I'm about to head to the beach and have a prawn, chorizo, crayfish and chilli salad with several bottles of pink wine in sunny St Ives, Cornwall.
