Forum favourite and county stalwart, Coeur De Lion, is being sold at Goffs latest ‘Horses In Training’ sale on Thursday, the concluding day of their 2 day auction. The sale is a condition of the syndicate when it was first set up and follows on from his excellent 2nd in the ‘Chester Plate’ earlier in the month. Here’s his sales page detailing everything you need to know about the old boy - http://www.goffsuk.com/GoffsCMS/_Sales/159/554.pdf The addition of Coeur De Lion would be a welcome boost to almost any barn not only in this country but around the world but the point of this thread is, people, how much do you think he will sell for??? Make your estimate below and the one closest to the actual purchase price is the winner. A chance for you to demonstrate your knowledge of form, bloodstock and the market place all in one go. Recent sales have all been in £’s so that is the currency to use. A ‘Barney Bonus’ to that person closest to the actual purchase price. Get the figure spot on and you’ll win and additional ‘Barney Bonus’ as well! Others of note, to me anyway, being sold over the 2 days include Bardd and Royal Irish Hussar, who until recently were both barned with The Lieutenant, Ronnie Bartlett’s ***an and the ex-Mr Nicholls inmate Connectable.
I wouldn't have a clue but if I were looking to buy him I would look at the following, before even looking at him: 1. He is a gelding so, unless he sets the World alight, once you buy him, you have him for life 2. On that basis I would have to look at the prospect of getting my money back and more. He has earned a total of £59k and he will be a 6yo in Jan 2019 3. You need to budget about £20k pa to keep a racehorse in training. So roughly speaking, as he has only been racing for 2 seasons, we would be breaking even at present if we had bought him 2 seasons ago (theoretically) for £19k 4. Let's start with an arbitrary figure of £50k to buy him now. Add 3 years of training costs £60k). That means he would need to earn £110k in the next 3 years to break even 5. So we are looking at the horse's future prospects as a flat cup horse and/or a decent hurdler/chaser 6. The next thing I would do is see how Timeform rate his future So far, £50k is looking a bit of a gamble to me so I would have to take my experts with me to look at the beast in person. If he looks impressive then the £50k starts to look reasonable. Conclusion. He will need to look impressive to justify £50k. If someone pays significantly more, I have to assume that they can see the horse has great potential and the very best of luck to them; I hope they are right I would say that, he has a very nice pedigree
This is the best news and am so excited to see where he ends up. As stated before the horse has such a big engine he just can’t jump for **** and even worst had a jockey who couldn’t ride a race over hurdles so he should know at least have a chance of winning a race over sticks in winter, especially if he ends up with the forums fav trainer. He has a big handicap win in him!!
Who is the jockey who couldn’t ride a race over hurdles??? Kevin Dowling??? Interesting that Wayne Hutchinson never got back on Coeur De Lion again after getting turned over at odds of 1/3, at Sandown Park, back in January ’17.
Bardd has been sold out of Seven Barrows to Danni O’Neil for £25,000. That’s not bad money for the ‘dreaded’ Elite Racing Club as he was only a 110 rated hurdler. Maybe his new owner will look to exploit him on the level instead though. Royal Irish Hussar who arrived at Seven Barrows, from Ballydoyle in ’13, with the ambition of becoming a NH stallion (win one of the big end of term juvenile Grade 1 events and then go off to stud) leaves it gelded and off to Lawney Hill for just £9,000. That’s life I suppose, team. Meanwhile, nice piece about the sale in today’s ‘Weekender’. They put up the one to note as being Shotgun Paddy’s little half-sister, Shotgun Sally – what a lovely name for a mare by the way. This 5YO daughter of Milan won her sole Point.
I see the nicholls yard is having a clear out tomorrow - and looks to be all the same owner too - that racing syndicate he had so the likes of Marracjuda, Valpone Jelois, Costal Tiep and more are all going. Howver I did see has bought some fame and glory gelding for nearly 300k so he needs to make some money back
I see my Dark horse to follow this season is due to go to the ring tomorrow (Winter Soldier) from Clossutton And interestingly ***an is going Througj too
Purely in my role as Devil’s Advocate, I am going to say that Coeur De Lion will not sell. If there is a reserve, they will have set it optimistically too high. For the various reasons given by Ron et al, I just do not see him having a great deal of value in the auction ring unless somebody from Hong Kong (or another overseas environ with high prize money) is bidding.
That is an awesome sum. I would guess that the syndicate would be Delighted with a capital ‘D’ with that amount. They got exactly double what I predicted! Janabelle is the winner of the comp though with an excellent estimate of £101,000. Any idea which barn Coeur De Lion is now likely to be sent???
Well done Janabelle. Unbelievable price. The buyers must see some potential there. Good luck to the new owners.
You just never know with buyers. Get at least two that want the same horse and sometimes all rational thought seems to leave their brains. Lucky sellers!
