We might not have held onto the win but at least our relegation has transferred into our own hands. We beat Swansea we then are in a good position as long as City don’t smash us on the last day
Sigh. At the end of the day we really do need to beat Swansea regardless. Otherwise we'd be on 35 points (if we'd won) going against Man City hoping Huddersfield don't get anything from Arsenal. Yoshida will be a big miss though.
I've calmed down now. Come on, the way we are playing now, no reason why we can't get a fluke against City. It's unlikely, but its not impossible. And ultimately, even if we do go down; keep hughes and 80% of our squad, make a couple of additions, and we'll bounce back faster than a kangaroo on a pogo stick on a trampoline.
Yeah the chance of that happening is slim I understand that, but not inconceivable to think Man City could put 4 or 5 past us then swans win by 4 themselves against Stoke.
It'll be interesting if Hughes brings Stephens in as a straight switch, or reverts to a back four. A draw is of almost no use to us (whereas it absolutely is of use to Swansea), so there is a case for playing an extra attacker. And Jack has been poor for a while. But we don't know what Bednarek is like as part of two, and I think Hughes got badly scared by playing the back four against West Ham.
we would still stay up on goals scored. if we just win by 1 goal on tuesday there would have to be a 10 goal swing for Swansea to go ahead of us.
Play stopped at 89:48 due to Klassem’s handball. It was restarted at about 91:28. Goal was scored at 95:05.
If we beat Swansea by 2 goals, we'd have a +11 GD over them. I'd hope we'd be able to keep Man City scoring down by that much...
In fact the more I think about it the less i care. In my head, Swansea beating stoke and Man City beating us are the most likely options. So those extra two points don't matter. Ignore Huddersfield, you cant pin your survival hopes on a team loosing three games.
My issue is not with the time, I think that was fair. The free kick in the corner was never a free kick. We'd have been in on goal or into the corner there. HOWEVER If we'd have won today, then drawn on Tuesday, there's a good chance we still go down (if Swans beat Stoke on last day) So even then we'd have most likely had to bear Swansea to get safe. Today's result is annoying, but may just fire the players up even more for Tuesday. COYS
Yeah, I would think that Swansea will be very careful. Draw and they're still in rather good shape, given their final match versus the remaining fixtures for ourselves and Huddersfield (assuming they don't get anything against City tomorrow). Lose and they need to rely on some luck. They have every incentive to keep it tight and try to nick one.
That is the crux of it. These dropped two points potentially affect whether we can finish above Huddersfield, but realistically they have no bearing on whether we can finish above Swansea. (Whereas the point "gained" today does have a bearing - a positive bearing - on the latter.)
We need to go to swansea and win now. Whilst i was gutted today had we won we might have gone for the draw at swansea and ended up losing. Straws and all that...
