Newcastle United are closing in on the £7m signing of Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga after the Mali international struck a secret deal with his French club.

Hotline can reveal that a Newcastle deputation travelled to France on Thursday to have another look at the 23-year-old striker in Sochaux’s 4-0 Europa League defeat at the hands of FC Metalist Kharkiv.

And Toon managing director Derek Llambias was still in France yesterday trying to tie up the deal.

Maiga (right) has been on strike since the start of the season in a bid to force through a move to Tyneside, and Sochaux have reported the Magpies to FIFA, claiming an illegal approach.

But he consented to play in the Kharkiv match in exchange for getting the green light to leave.

Maiga’s agent Karim Aklil revealed: “He played on condition that the club allowed him to leave this month, providing they find a replacement.”

Maiga said: “I want it to be done with Newcastle. England is a dream. I want to go.”

Also on Toon’s shortlist are Senegalese striker Papiss Demba Cisse, who is also interesting FULHAM, and French forward Nolan Roux.

 

So basically he isn't going anywhere until they get someone new in, can't see it happening in that case with so little time remaining

Good news, seen bits of him and think he looks like a good prospect, I think there would be better suited players out there but its getting to the point now that I just want a striker in so much I'll take a gamble on anything.

Maiga looks good potential-wise but he will need time, and right now i dont think we can afford to give someone say half a season to adapt...

otherwise i'd be happy with him, but our team still needs time to gel
