I just been looking at how teams have got on since their promotion from L2 to L1 in recent seasons.

Promoted from L2 to L1 season before us:
Burton - Been promoted to the championship and surviving only just! May be relegated soon though back to L1.
Shrewsbury - Looks set to finish in the play offs.
Bury - Relegated back to L2 this season.
Southend - Currently 13th, behind us only on goal difference.

Promoted from L2 to L1 with us:
Northampton - In the relegation zone and could soon be back in L2.
Oxford - Currently in 16th and 3 points behind us.
Wimbledon - Currently in 18th and 6 points behind us but only 3 points outside the relegation zone.

Promoted from L2 to L1 after us:
Portsmouth - Currently in 8th and 7 points above us and 4 points away from the play offs.
Plymouth - Currently in 7th and 8 points above us and 3 points away from the play offs.
Doncaster - Currently in 14th and 2 points behind us.
Blackpool - Currently in 10th and 3 points above us. Cannot make the play offs.

So in recent seasons, promoted teams from L2 have held their own in L1. None of the last 12 promoted teams over the last 3 seasons were relegated in their 1st season in L1. Only Bury have been relegated back to L2 so far and this was after 3 full seasons in L1. Another team (Northampton) is still alive but currently residing in the relegation zone. If they go down then that will be after 2 full seasons in L1.

With this in mind, Accrington and Luton (who have won promotion this season from L2) will be hoping to consolidate themselves in L1 like the last 12 teams have manage to do. Looking at other teams in L2 who could be joining us, you have Wycombe, Exeter and Notts Co all competing for the final automatic place. Whoever goes up from them will be another tough opponent for L1 teams next season.

Therefore, next season will be a tough one and I havent even mentioned the teams who will be joining us from the championship who will be contenders for a top 6 finish next season.

You would think that Sunderland should be able to go straight back

Luton will have the financial backing to do ok

I really hope that X - Zedder can pip The Chairboys to third spot although with the latter at The Spireites on Saturday it looks doubtful so I guess that we shall all just have to hope that the weather systems remain calm when it is our turn to visit Buckinghamshire next term.

Accrington may be like Fleetwood and do quite well, but they'll need to hang onto their best players. Then they'll probably implode and drop out of the Football League altogether like Daggers.

Delsy I don't know about the Sunderland faithful not looking forward to Accrington going to the Stadium of light I'm not looking forward to them coming to the Mem either, every time I have watched them play they have wasted so much time in fact I think they must have a degree in timewasting

League One next season should be wide open. The three teams coming down from the Championship will not be as strong as Blackburn, Wigan and Rotherham.

AMOT I think it depends on how much the new consortium put in the kitty for the manager of Sunderland, they will also get bigger gates than us so their spending power on wages will be better. This will if they pick a manager who knows the lower leagues give them some advantage over a lot of the clubs left in this division

Don't forget the parachute payment old timer.Sunderland's budget will be way bigger than anyone else's even disregarding the gate receipts. Nice to know it's going to be a fair start isn't it.

They get a £40m parachute payment and a wage bill currently of £26m. Also they got to pay nearly £20m on 2 players that has recently been investigated by FIFA. Their parachute payment has already been wiped out. Also 7 players on their books is loans and a few of the older players will be leaving. They will need around 15-18 new players in the summer with potentially a new owner who has less money than the owner they have who is about to leave the club. All this was on talksport earlier from someone to do with the club who is very concerned about the clubs future because the consortium who looks likely to be taking over with the new owner apparently has an agreement that if Sunderland don't go straight up at the first attempt, they can walk away free leaving the owner in all kinds of problems because it will mean they will fall into administration.

Nothing like hedging your bets CJS is there. Knowing what it is like when your team goes down I feel for the supporters there but if it was just the owners I almost wish they would carry on going down. Either you want to own the club and try to take it forward or you don't but to have a get out of jail card like that disrespects the supporters
I hadn't realised CJS that the parachute payments were that big at Championship level

The parachute payment will still be from the prem old timer. Once relegated from the prem, you get parachute payments for 3 years. They got 2 more years to go meaning 2 more parachute payments to go.

They base the parachute payment on how much income the team got from just TV revenue within their last season in the prem. Sunderland got £99.9 million in their season from TV deals. Following relegation from the prem: Year 1 you get 55% of what you got in your final year as a parachute payment. Year 2 you get 45% of what you got in your final year as a parachute payment. Year 3 you get 20% of what you got in your final year as a parachute payment. If they get promoted within those 3 years back to the prem, the payments obviously stops.

Thanks for explaining that CJS I wrongly assumed that if relegated the following season they didn't deserve it
