I'm still of the opinion that the club is pursuing a prudent policy of bringing in younger, pacy players whose value doesn't slide during their contracts. It would have been madness to offer Nolan a 5 year deal and Joey, well Joey **** in his nest long ago and the fact he was given away on a free tells you all you need to know.

Nolan in effect balances Cabaye, we had HBA and have picked up a few lads on free transfers......so funds wise it's even. Which now makes the Carroll deal madness.

Picking up the likes of Ba ( probably on £20,000 week), and not getting rid of one from Best/Lover/Shola probably would have given AC a bumper wage to keep him. no club NEEDS to sell their best players. There's Modric and Tevez both been told to stay put.

If we had AC today instead of all this chasing rejects like Erdinc etc we'd be laughing with our current squad.

Carroll is good but he isn't that good. Well, unless you expect him to score as many as someone like Tevez.

And the Modric and Tevez sagas are very different to the Carroll one. Mainly because clubs coming in for those players are trying to meet the valuations, whereas Liverpool came in and COMPLETELY overvalued Carroll. I think NUFC would have fought hard for a young talent like that, but £35mill really is too good to turn down.

He didn't need to be sold, and it'd have been nice to keep him, but £35m was way over his value and probably more than he'll ever be worth in the future. Ignoring the who forced the move issue, I can see why the bid was accepted. Just a shame the money hasn't been used how the fans expected, although for all we know it could still have gone to a very important use (no, not lining Ashley's pockets).

Of course we didn't need to sell him. But we were never going to get £35 mil for him again. I believe that was fat boy's view
