    http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-n...24/51/newcastle-set-talks-lyon-over-defender?

I know it's talk****e but still worth reporting on and all this Barton stuff is becoming repetitive. After Pieters representatives and he himself strongly indicated that negotiations are near conclusion, this new piece of info has come to the fore saying Cissokho will be flying in for a medical on Monday and we will hold "crunch talks over the weekend" with Lyon to try and agree a fee.

Just a quick question for everyone..who would you like at Newcastle if we had the choice?

I have to admit I haven't watched Pieters and I have watched highlights of Cissokho a few times in the Champions League. They both have pedigree, with Cissokho playing in the Champions League for Lyon and Pieters now the established first choice left back for the World's Number one team (apparently). To be honest, I want Pieters as from what I have heard, he is very solid defensively and can still attack and personally, a left back needs to be able to defend first, attack second. Cissokho seems the opposite, better attacking than defending. But I wouldn't complain if either of them came to the club.

But this is just my opinion. I think we will definitely get a left back and a mediocre striker.

I think we could do with a more attacking left back this season. Someone like Baines (not actually Baines, just a similar player) with a lot of assists and goals (for a left back) would really help our cause considering the lack of firepower we seem to have at the moment.

Good point there. But I think we are going to build our team season by season. I think Pardew will focus on clean sheets and building a solid foundation to the team before the great attacking play. From what he and the players have said, this is what I have gathered:

We have been working on the roles of each member of the team when defending and also keeping possession and dominating games we should be winning. This will make us hard to beat. Next season is when we can be a bit more expansive with our play and take more risks. Like Man City but on a smaller scale. I think we will see a few more 0-0, 1-0 and 2-0's this season

Now I know you can't base opinions on highlights from one game, but I watched the Eredivisie equivalent of Match of the Day on ESPN the other day, and was rather surprised by Pieters. The highlights that I saw of him were from the game that Pardew watched, where he was apparently 'man of the match'. After all this talk of him being solid defensively, he played surprisingly high up the pitch and looked impressive going forward. On the other hand however, it only showed one clip of him defending and his positioning was absolutely terrible!

This may be an ill-informed opinion from a one-off game but he was certainly a much different player than what I had expected.

A mediocre striker would still be an improvement on what we have now (Sammy excepted, obviously).

Seriously, as regards LB, I'd be happy with either.

Hate to break this to you, but I think you may have missed my point, Mr T.

I don't dispute for a second that we need reinforcements/ replacements (particularly upfront - the Sammy reference was an attempt to inject a bit of levity into the discussion. I could easily have referred to Ryan Taylor, but I think that line's probably been done to death). However, I don't think we can afford to be picky anymore, so as long as we're not spooked into paying over the odds, anything's better than nothing.

to the op: you copied my name lol, this is going to get confusing because i thought i wrote this for a moment!

i think we will get pieters the sun is reporting it as a done deal and they normally spot on when they say its a done deal. if we get santon i would be delighted, cissoko im not so sure, he would be available at a reduced fee because of his health issues but they could effect any resale value he might have and we normally offer 5 year deals. could he really play for that long in a league that is a lot quick and more physical, plus cup games and europa possibly in the future. if hes likely to have a short carreer at the levels hes at surely prem football wil shorten his career further?
