Why? All our waters and the Spanish French Dutch Norway and whoever else seem to take first pickings. Once we leave the EU our fisheries will grow.
When I was 16, I was lucky enough to be invited by my godmother to stay in a holiday house her parents had on a loch open to the sea on the West Coast of Scotland. While there, we took a motor launch out, trolling for fish (that is, towing a lure across the loch). We were catching fish called pollack, and they were huge, some over 20lb. At the end of the day, we left a full fish box of pollack on the quayside, and the villagers helped themselves, stocking up their freezers with winter coming. I went back to the cottage about 10 year ago, and did some spinning off the rocks, catching a small pollack little bigger than the lure I was using. I spoke to a local about the poor fishing, and he told me that some years before, a Spanish factory ship had come into the loch and netted everything, scouring the bottom and leaving with fish of every size. There was nothing left to grow on. The local said that in the summer, he used to fish for an hour after work in the summer, to catch enough herring for his family for supper. Now there were no herring left. We need to take back control of fishing in our waters and carry out commercial fishing sustainably. The EU shows no inclination to do so. The trade deal after the transition must give us back full rights to our fishing grounds.
This Facebook thing - paving the way for a challenge to the recent US election? A challenge to the validity of the brexit vote? Wrong thread?
Spot on Goldie. I listened to a Scottish fisherman on TV basically saying the same. He said they all come into our waters take what they want and we are left with nothing. This should not be happing. Many 'remainers' moaned about the loss of jobs and business if we leave the EU. Now is a good to support them and be as vocal?
Remember Woody we were all told that it was the majority of old people voted to leave. Thing is the majority of old people don't have Facebook. So are you saying the younger 'remain' voters (who have Facebook) were influenced?
Good point. Not really saying anything (as usual), but wondering where this story will lead. You know it will lead somewhere.
If you are going to say something Oslo please have the right information. After Brexit and since the vote they have been coming out with all the demographics and voting habits. It was stated that many over 60's voted to leave. It is also a known fact that there are less Facebook users the older you are.
This story is a shocking Woody, privacy rules have been broken. There will be a cover-up. Do you think one of the richest blokes on the planet won't use his contacts? I reckon this will be a good future debate.
More election spending stuff. The Lib Dems were basically the only party who repeatedly listed burgers as an election expense, allowing us to draw up this important list of The UK's Most Popular Liberal Democrat Election Burgers please log in to view this image whats a dirty burger
No, just pointing out that his statement was wrong. TBH it was like most of the 'project fear' ones. I can't understand why people need to talk crap about something that is clearly not true. A bit like that red bus sign.
They will be fine. Sure the EU takes more from us than we do from them. They also buy more - 75% of our fleets catch is exported. We simply don't eat what comes from our waters which is why we import so much from Norway, Iceland and Asia (prawns and tuna). Of course it would be better to move to full independent status next year but they won't be worse off. The deal struck genuinely makes that impossible - and if there is a way for them to screw us over without screwing themselves over, what goes round comes round. It really isn't in their interests to **** about on this one. And no - it's not ideal. But it's not a disaster.
You need to go and look around an old folks home and just see how most of them have their faces stuck in a book.
The Cambridge Analytica thing is pretty old news. Insiders said they could profile people from their Facebook likes (to the point of knowing more about the individual than their nearest and dearest). They then targeted the borderline voters in things like Brexit and the US elections and used emotive psychological tools to sway the voter. I think they described it similarly to programming soldiers in some military scenarios but can't remember the exact details (I did post a link way back in this thread). As for progress on Brexit, we vote leave and have a 2 year deadline (once we start the ball rolling) and we have now agreed to leave in 2 years (nearly 2 years after voting). In the meantime we have promised to pay the EU lots of money. Well done Teresa.
