Don't abuse people that are going about their daily life and you won't get spat at, simple as that. I hate the way protagonists always claim to be the victim when their cowardly goading comes back to bite them, they created the situation, accept you were wrong and move on. I'm not condoning spitting at all, it's a pretty grim thing to do and Carra will rightly be hung for it but his 'victims' need to get a grip.

It doesn't at all, it means you have to accept accountability for your own actions, at no point does that justify or excuse the other persons actions. You don't know how people will respond so why put yourself in a situation where you're going to find out? Leave them to get on with their lives and there's a very good chance they'll leave you to get on with yours.
He's had far worse on and off the pitch for over 20 years, I'd be amazed if that's all that was said, still doesn't excuse it though.

There is no justification to his actions. There’s no proof of prior provocation & even if there was it doesn’t justify the reaction.
