Chris Coleman on the impact Ellis Short's desire to sell Sunderland is having and why Martin Bain is the best he's worked for Sunderland owner Ellis Short. RICHARD MENNEAR Email Published: 10:51 Monday 19 February 2018 7 HAVE YOUR SAY Chris Coleman admits Sunderland's passionate fanbase need owners who care about the club as much as they do, with Ellis Short looking to sell. Sunderland owner Short, who is now based in the US, wants to sell the club and hasn't been at a home game since the start of the season, leaving the day-to-day running of the club with chief executive Martin Bain. Sunderland manager Chris Coleman. Coleman, speaking ahead of the Tuesday night game at relegation rivals Bolton Wanderers, says the club's passionate fanbase need people at the club who care as much about the club as they do. Coleman said: "At a club like Sunderland there is incredible passion and a lot of supporters, they need people here who care about the club as much as them. Here lies a problem. "Obviously Ellis wants to sell the club and they recognise that maybe his love for the club was maybe yesterday. "Until that changes, he wants to sell the club, that is common knowledge, until we get someone that wants to turn a corner with, love it and care for it and look after it, hence all the negativity. "If the people here - and they do love the club - don't feel that you feel the same then there is a problem. "We know all about that and the anger and the frustration from everybody. "Myself, Martin [Bain] and the players have to accept that, we take it on the chin. "Until we have a new owner with new ideas we are where we are." The club's chief executive Martin Bain was targeted by one frustrated fan during the second half of the Brentford defeat with the fan shouting 'Are you happy?' at Bain, while other fans vented their frustration at the final whistle as he made his way inside. Coleman says Bain will take the criticism on the chin adding he has never worked for a better chief executive during his time in football management. "Martin is very much the man that has been pushed out in front and he has accepted responsibility. He is a big boy, he can handle it, no problem," added Coleman. "I do understand why people vent their anger somewhere, they have had enough of what has been going on. Martin is the front man for all that, he has to take it, he knows that. "But for me, 15 years of management, I haven't worked for a better chief executive than the one I am working for now. "He will take the criticism, he is a big boy. We understand people will vent their anger and rightly so and we have to accept that." Read more at: https://www.sunderlandecho.com/spor...in-bain-is-the-best-he-s-worked-for-1-9023546
Should have sold when we were in the premier league !. wrong owners, bringing in the wrong managers, bringing in the wrong players, and over priced. I have spent thousands following this club but this may be my last season, unless a move is made. Man c were in the 3rd division about 25 years ago but look at them now.
Just watched his press conference on SAFC. com What a breath of fresh air Chris Coleman is. You won't find many managers who are as honest as this guy. I just hope he doesn't get hounded out of the club by the boo boys.
I dread to think where we'd be now if we hadn't appointed Bain and had blundered on with an incompetent chief exec. There's only so much he can do unfortunately but at least the club is now working hard to right itself and isn't just merrily pissing money away.
I love the fact that Coleman has called Short out. Not that that way will feel anymore ‘driven’ to do anything about selling, the ****bird.
I totally accept that ultimately everything is Shorts responsibility but Bain cannot go without blame here. When he took over the squad Big Sam put together was as close as we have come for a long time to getting that mid table stability we were all looking for. IMO needed to sign M'Villa and Yedlin for starters. M'Villa as a player wouldn't have been the usual Sunderland signing as he never missed a game through injury...we normally go for the signings that are out for four to five months at a time injured. Along came Moyes a fellow jock with Bain.....Short pumped in another 20 million plus to get Bains tenure off to a decent start but we p*ssed away with N'Dong, Papy, Love, McNair etc. We gave away Kaboul for f*ck all. Second game into the season the manager Mr Moyes said we were doomed. By November desperation set in. Past history showed that Short would cut the manager off and we would get in a new one. Didn't happen under Bain's watch and we should have sacked Moyes then. Get to January and we needed signings.....the year before prior to Bain, Short authorized Khazri, Kirchoff and Kone to come. Nothing happened under Bain's watch. Must be coincidence again. Summer 10 signings for 1.5 million. Bain tried to appoint fellow Jock McInnes.....Bain had consulted Walter Smith and David Moyes. Appointed Grayson then threw him under the bus for not performing the miracle with his new squad. Hate Short but thankful for Bain for what? FFS.....this position is paid for results.
We've already talked about the spending issue and as we've established I think Bain is blameless for our lack of spending and for some reason you think he is so that's old ground. I'll give you that a couple of the incomings and outgoings (or lack of) have been a bit suspect like Kaboul going for too little and overpaying for Papy. I'm not saying everything he has done is golden. I'm not going to blame him for sticking with Moyes though, changing manager twice a year had got us nowhere and it was time to try stability. Added to that the spending since suggests there was no way we could have afforded to pay him off and judging from this season the squad he was working with couldn't have been kept up by a dream team of the best managers in the world. As for what he's done well. The wage bill has been slashed dramatically and new contracts are appropriately stingy. We got good money for Pickford and have shipped out players with alleged bad attitudes like Lens and Khazri. We've signed a team of players for about 50p. We managed to get Coleman who is a perfect fit for what we need and at the very highest level we could realistically have got. I don't take that stuff for granted. The only person I blame for our situation is Short and not because technically the buck stops with him but because it's his ****ing fault.
