The sale of Barton will add more balance and pace to our attacking unit, it's obvious what we will miss from Joey and I'm a big fan of Barton and I'd want him to stay but looking on the positive side of things there are benefits of him leaving. For example look at this when everyone is fit:

Against weaker teams or when were really going for it (from midfield up):

    -----------------------------------Tiote
    ---------------------Cabaye----------------------HBA
    Jonas-----------------------------Besty--------------------------Marveaux

Look at the pace in that! It's unreal, we will rip teams to shreds. It's designed with the Barca triangle in midfield, Tiote in the (defensive) Busquets role and Cabaye and HBA in the Xavi and Iniesta role. Cabaye being the playmaker because of his magnificent passing range and HBA getting forward to join in the scoring fun with Besty. As for the front 3, Jonas and Marveaux are wingers who will double up as inside forwards. For example they might take on the man and cross or they might come inside to shoot. Or they might come inside for some link up play or to get on the end of a pass so they can stick the ball in the net. The reason for the controversial decision of having Besty up front is because he has a bit of pace and in my opinion he is better than Shola and Demba. Shola and Demba are good target men but in this formation there is no need for target men, it's more about elegant passing, creative moving and attacking flair. Although Best doesn't exactly fit into those categories he does so more than Shola and Demba who both have the agility of a stone.

When we play the top teams and a draw would be good we could play (from midfield up):

    Jonas----------------Cabaye-------------------Tiote------------Marveaux
    -------------------------------------HBA
    ------------------------------------Besty

Now it's a defensive triangle. With Tiote and Cabaye playing defensive, Cabaye will join in the attack when we break. HBA will support Besty up top. Jonas and Marveaux are wide midfielders now. They will be helping the full backs out and when we get the ball and break they will be out to attack those wings. Not the best formation but it will get us draws from the very top teams which will have more possession than us and then we can revert back to our winning formation when we want to control possession and win the match.

There are no positives from losing one of our better players for me. I know what you're talking about but all those formations are better with Bartons name included as he is versatile and could work within those formations. Just a bad decision for me. The only smidgeons of positivity I can draw from it is Mr Ashley is a little closer to getting his money back and ****ing off, and regardless how much I like Barton these days and how much he's turned himself round, we get a lot of bad PR (the vast majority complete bollocks) off his back unfortunately.

And that they'd stop putting Jonas on the right. <grr>

    Leon best is completely average

We can't play a barca style game as that's not the way we play , you can't just put our team into barca formation and expect us to stroke it around
Demba ba is our only real goalscorer until we get a new ST and for me has to be given games
Losing joey does give us balance but that doesn't necessarily make us better because we have pace

Big figure to lose in our side , more so than Carroll and Nolan

I agree with what you are saying, and losing him does give us a more clear team structure. However, I think this:

    --------------Tiote--------------
    -----Cabaye------Barton-------
    HBA-----------------------Jonas
    -------------Ba/Best------------

is stronger than what you've got, so...

Jonas is a right sided midfielder it's his natural position. We played him on the left when Duff left. He formed a good partnership with Enrique, he's gone so why not move him back to his natural side instead of forcing him to play on the wrong side. Especially since we now have a natural left sided player (marveaux) and hopefully a new left back for him to form a partnership with.

Also, on JB leaving, gives us more freedom in midfield as fans won't cry outrage if he's not picked. Abeid/HBA/Cabaye/Gosling/Vuckic all possible to start more frequently now ( I know HBA/Gosling were injured last season but still).

I don't care what people say about us improving, the team is nowhere near last season's as it stands. Replace RTaylor with Cissokho and you're perhaps getting closer, but still not there.

Maybe Joey is sitting in London regretting sending some of those tweets. He should know Ashley won't back down, the man doesn't care. He still does not have to go to QPR, if he does its all about money.

I'd like to see us go for a 4-5-1 with a midfield/frontline of:

    Jonas, Gosling, Tiote, Cabaye, Marveaux
    Ba

Which, when attacking becomes a 4-3-3 with a midfield/frontline of:

    Gosling, Tiote, Cabaye
    Jonas, Ba, Marveaux

Now that is a very dangerous attacking formation filled with pace, creativity, flair and work-ethic, which is flexible enough to attack on the break, build attacks, or sit back a bit and allow opposition to try and play their way through the midfield.

You cant just tell our players to play like Barca and expect them to do it. Barca's players have been trained to play that way since they were kids.

    How broad are Krul's shoulders???

I see what you mean about the team being weaker, but our bench is defo stronger, with Marveaux, Gosling, Obertan etc., who are certainly better than Smith, Guthrie etc.

I still think he'll end up somewhere better to be honest. The one thing he can't afford to do is sit out the final year of his contract here. Just too many risks involved, and its seems he's finally come to his senses and realised Ashley ain't changing his mind. He needs to get himself sorted with a club pronto. Of course I would prefer he stayed but I've been resigned to him going once they withdrew the contract offer at the beginning of the season. There is no bigger hint than that. I personally can't see how anybody could think its about money. He'd stay here if he could get a contract on his current terms. He is going to get a wage rise regardless if he leaves because there is no fee, he is essentially a bosman. Good position to be in. I know its QPR but come deadline day he is gonna have to move somewhere.

He's a left winger! He's always played on the left, for Newcastle, for Mallorca, for Argentina. But no, because he's right footed he should play on the right, and the many managers and the player himself have been getting it wrong for the last decade. I suppose you'd argue Robben is being forced out of position at Bayern Munich, and Henry when he was at Arsenal, and Messi in his early Barcelona days?

    <laugh>

The picture was just ripped off last year's fantasy football. <ok>

This always gets right on my tits, loads of people put him on the right, but this isn't Fifa, it's real life and it doesn't work like that.

He's not, He's a Right Winger, He plays on the right for Argentina, RW or RB, Maradonna had him there during world cup. " Following the departure of Left-sided winger Damien Duff in the transfer window, Gutierrez has switched from his usual right winger to left winger position - (Wikipedia Source)"

"The right-sided attacker joined the Magpies from Spanish outfit RCD Mallorca on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee." - Nufc.co.uk

We signed Jonas as a Right Sided Attacking Midfielder (as we didn't have a decent one).

Yes, but let's keep it realistic. How often was that formation played? How many times did Ben Arfa play? On paper it might be stronger, but in reality we could go into this season with a starting 11 which is stronger than the vast majority of last season. That's what counts.

Plus, it isn't necessarily about getting new players. It's also about players and their own developments. Krul, Simpson and Stevie Taylor are all already playing much better than they did last season. Definite improvement on those fronts purely through natural development of young players. Jonas has also improved.

I must say I've always thought that he was originally a right winger. I just presumed he never moved because he wanted to play alongside the left with Enrique.

And the theory of him being right footed might seem simplistic but it is worth taking into account. The simple fact is that if he can kick better with his right foot, he's going to find crosses much easier compared to coming in from the left. He doesn't have to get it onto his better foot or put in a cross with his weaker foot.

Jonas is an always has been a LW, Duff played RW for us!

And he did play RB in the world cup, due to lack of attacking RB's they had, but is used as LW when played in MF for the argies

We can now have Tiote and Cabaye sitting deep, with a very pacy and exciting 3 players behind a striker

    Tiote - Cabaye
Marveaux - Ben Arfa - Jonas

    Ba

Replacements for the CMs are: Gosling, Guthrie, Smith, in that order I'd say.
Replacements for the wingers and attacking midfielder are: Obertan, Ferguson, Vuckic, Sameobi, Abeid possibly in that order. Very youthful
Replacements for the strikers are: Best, Shola, Lover, hopefully in that order

LB, Striker and Winger needed, in that priority order.
