So you think what happened last night is the best outcome for us? <whistle>

    Yes!

I'm only interested in finishing as high as possible. We couldn't catch Man Utd unless they dropped points against someone else. Spurs can't catch us unless we allow them to.

What you and others are suggesting by wanting a Spurs loss is 'fourth at all costs' mentality. You'll be calling yourself gooners next!

Plus, on the fourth at all costs mentality approach, you're focusing on the wrong team anyway. Chelsea are on free fall, Spurs are in form. We're more likely finish above the former than latter!

PS...failure to get top four would be our own fault due to our own failings, not because Spurs didn't lose to Man Utd!

TBH is calling us gooners meant we won two fa cups and were in league cup final I'd take it <laugh>

you are right about cheslea though.. As long as we build a gap on SOMEONE I don't care who it is.

    cheslea:

    watford
    west brom
    Hull FA cup
    Barca CL
    Utd
    Man city

If they don't buck up and take the points on offer in next two games v **** teams then they will be in trouble.

    Spurs
    LFC
    Newport FA cup
    Arsenal
    Juve CL
    Palace
    Hudderfield

They need to play well right now as the teams they play could end their season. They tehn get it easy. FA cup draw was VERY kind to them :(

    Utd:
    huddersfield
    newcastle
    FA CUP hudderfield or birmingham
    Sevilla CL
    Cheslea
    Palace

Utd can make hay i nthe next two games and look like heros.

You make some good points but the discussion was about which outcome was better for us, not relying on others to do our job. Surely people can see that last nights outcome was the worst of the three possible ones.

Wishing to tie up or secure 4th does not preclude also fighting for 2nd or finishing as high as possible.

Of course we can't influence the outcome of other matches. But all things considered, why wouldn't we wish one of the rivals to be left behind? Why isn't a gap of 5 points more desirable than a gap of 2 just before a match between us?

If we were solid and reliable I would probably think a bit differently but we can drop points regularly and unexpectedly and i am not THAT confident in a battle with 3 others.

what happens if we lose to spurs and all this in our hands stuff goes our the window.....

Careful what you wish for is the main issue.

We asked what if we lose to Swansea after beating City. We did and then this weeks results have been kind to us bar Spurs. I’m not too worried about who beats who, just as long as we do better than a couple of teams around us we’ll be ok.

Which you can't do without looking at the implications on the rest of the season.

As a one off game, irrelevant of anything else to do with the season, every Liverpool fan wants a Man Utd loss. Doesn't matter who else is playing, Man Utd loss is the preferred option.

It was never "just" about that game and its possible outcomes. Any outcome we wanted beyond the 'Man Utd to lose' mentality was based on league standings and therefore we were stating our preferred option based on the current league table.

You can't have it both ways. It is one or the other. It just so happens that, for me, both scenarios were Man Utd to lose was preferred.

As I keep saying, if prefer us to earn the right than be granted it.

I actually think that is a more apt reason for people wanting Man Utd to win last night; they're scared that we'll lose to Spurs!

I believe we are capable of finishing above Chelsea and Man Utd. Spurs are better than both of them imo

It's a 38 game season, and there are all sorts of
    #plottwists

It is in our hands - if we lose to Spurs that will be our own doing as much as any other loss.

Keep Spurs out for 12 seconds, don't score an own goal, don't play Pogba and Lukaku

That's why I said that Carl's logic wasn't logic at all. He was responding to emotion as much as anyone else - it was just a different one.

We are very capable of winning or losing this match. What will be will be but I'm confident that we will finish above Arsenal and at least one of Chelsea or Man Utd.

    thats fair enough view.

I don't agree mind but I respect your point of view

    Mine is

    a) spurs and pochettino get a lot of credit for a few good runs but have never won a thing. they managed again to be out of both domestic cups and have a draw in LC that could certain go against them AND are in 5th. I think spurs are harry kane. I'm not that impressed with the rest

    b) Chelsea anything could happen yet. Can't read it yet. Morata is quality but not adapted to league, hazard is pure lass, they've quality but we will see. The form is poor in january. fixtures? Not sure. in the end they've 50 points after having a poor run of form in last 5 which says they've been right up there.

    c) Utd, far too much bias on this board anti utd due to rivalry. they've a world class keeper and matic, herrara and pgoba should be good 3 man midfield. Up fornt they've multiple options for a front 3 as well. young at LB is a joke tbh but don't care.

the reality is utd should grind sides to paste with aggression and physicality. They SHOULD win most games out of the lot of us but thats only if mourinho lets them.
Anything could happen with chelsea... so maybe we might finish ahead of them.. who knows. It'd be nice!

Spurs are all kane. If he's leading the line the rest work. they can certain go on a run to take 2nd. they could equally end up 5th. mind you they've done the suaul and got out of all the cups to focus on top 4 AGAIN...

Utd have CL aspirations and an easy draw imo. They are in FA cup
Cheslea are in CL with tough draw. they are in FA cup
Spurs are in CL with toughish draw and are out of cup
We are in CL but have no aspirations and have no fa cup

By the time march comes utd and cheslea might have fixutre issues and tired legs while we are dasiy fresh playing one a week along with spurs.

    The mighty spurs, win nothing.

Agree on Kane FC but he's a bloody big difference too!

Agree on the bias about Man Utd too but still believe we can finish above them. Just depends on us vs lower ranked teams.

It's 13 games on us. The Spurs game is no more important than the rest.

We beat City so can beat spurs.

We lost to Swansea so can be beaten by ....well, anyone...making a win against spurs irrelevant.

Tbh it's the 8 draws so far not the 3 losses that are more likely to result in 5th place if that % continues thought remaining season.

In summary - a draw last night would have been ideal.

    The mancs dont win.
