I can sort of see the point about the fee and I do wonder whether the club would have paid quite such a high fee for this player last summer.

But of course we're not in the summer (meaning there are fewer options open to us), we're in the relegation zone, we lack goals and more specifically we lack a striker of this type. We may be overpaying - although it's hard to judge that in the current market - but we've dug ourselves into a hole and I'd say we're more likely to get out of that hole if we add this guy than we are if we don't get anyone in.

I've liked more of our transfers than I've disliked. The notion though that we should be happy simply because we signed someone, anyone, is a mite silly. We need a lot from our winter signings here; if they are ordinary, we're in massive trouble, and signing Carrillo necessarily forecloses other options. We went into January with major needs in attack; we'll exist with Monaco's Human Victory Cigar up top. It might work out, but what part of our dealings over the past 18 months suggests that we should default to deliriously happy?

Totally agree, especially the last bit! Sometimes, as long as the new player gels with his team mates, the impetus of his arrival renews the enthusiasm as well as remind the existing players that a 'new kid is on the block' and will take a place off them, if good and effective enough. That's life, especially in football. This signing is also an MP2 recruit and so we hope that has a positive effect too for both the team and especially the manager. There have been quite a few managers who, in their early days had a really rough time, yet remained in post and eventually got it right, so just on a purely humane scale, I am hoping for MP that this is the case. We need some fresh legs and other options than is currently the case so let's support the team as we know how. Sunday was a good start by all concerned!

Mods, can you put an extra ! in the title, I think that is what's causing the delay in this transfer

No point saying we have over paid because none of us really have any idea how good he is.

If signed a player we hadnt heard of for £5m nobody would be saying what a great deal it is. We would just assume he isnt great.

Give the guy a chance - he might be worth it.

Don’t worry! Changing the number of !’s in the title could only have a negative effect!

Obviously they are entitled to have an informed opinion as to how much they value him at.

Although considering he has started two league games this year, I'd say nobdoy has watched him play enough to know that much about him!

The people that have seen him play have said that he is a good target man, who should be suited to the PL.

The notion that we should immediately look at the negative side of it is a mite sillier... in my opinion.

Each to their own. I tend to prefer evaluating deals on their (perceived) merits rather than reflexively choosing a side. Some of our transfers looked very good to me. Some of those turned out, some didn't. Some of our transfers looked very bad to me. Some of those turned out, some didn't.

If you want to debate why Carrillo's qualities and goalscoring record make him a good option to lead us back from the brink, have at 'er.

Jeez, some of our fans. We ask the CBK question interminably, and when the answer is "nearly" loads go into "oh no, not him" mode. I am not going to even consider rating this bloke until he's turned out at least half a dozen times. While he wears a Saints shirt he's got my support. Score goals against Stoke, Bournemouth and the like and he can have a bloody statue. As for the price, it probably is inflated. It's called the market, which right now is daft.

    This thread...

It's kinda like when you're going on a family holiday to France, and you have to convince granny - who's obviously never been before but hates it anyway - that the trip is going to be worth it.

If he signs, he’ll be a Saints player, so he gets my support. If he proves to be a turkey after a reasonable number of games (bearing in mind it took Mané a whole season to step up to the PL), then I might start to question the wisdom of buying him. Until then, I’m behind him 100%.

Player can be **** at one club and good at another. People can only judge what they have seen and can't see the future.
