  1. Actually NVQ level 2 isn't GCSE level, it's not A-level or degree level.

It's a qualification achieved whilst gaining experience and knowledge of a particular environment.

    It's not like GCSE's or A-Levels.

To gain the qualification i had to make files and reports, work within a team in an office and prove my knowledge whist being observed by my manager.

It's not the same as sitting tests at the end of a year of taking down notes.

My manager told me it's regarded to some employers as A-Level quality, but she told me that it's mainly about what i did to achieve the qualification, that attracts employers.

I know its not like GCSE or A-Level.

I have done them myself. Thankfully I managed to complete my NVQ 3/4 with the hotel before being made redundant. But they are classed as equivalents.

And, all I'am saying is that, if you only have a level 2. You should then move onto level 3, and complete it. Before trying to go for higher paid jobs. I cant knock your amibition. But, the NVQ 2, isnt going to be as impressive as someone who can produce a level 3 or higher.

Go for a lesser job. And work your way up. Its better than being jobless dude <ok> There is no shame in it.

Its not worth Jack ****. But Tash certainly needs to get more education under his belt before he starts looking at higher paid jobs. I would have thought being unsuccessful constantly for 5 months would have made him realise.

But like I say. His ambition cant be knocked. Just needs the education, and im sure he will be well on his way to ICT greatness lol

Until he gets sacked in the first week for spending all his time on here instead of doing any work.

    Jeez tash...

I study full time with the Open Uni halfway through 2nd year of a Chemistry degree while working full time as a Lab Technician and maintaining some semblance of a social life.

Jobs are scarce these days... If you are unemployed and can't get work then do some voluntary work. My brother didnt pass any GCSE's but did voluntary work and ended up working hard and getting a job out of it with the same guy.

My ex qualified as a physio with a 2:1 and couldnt get a job but she did 1 year voluntary. Hopsital told her they had no jobs but they would allow her to work for nowt! She has a job now as she had the experience

Pretty sure I read that the NE has got like the lowest unemployment rate for 16-34 year olds in England (or the UK, I'm unsure). Don't turn your nose up at a lesser job. Like other people have said beggars can't be choosers especially in todays world.

Yeah I was thinking of moving to the NE to do a PhD in Cancer Research when Im done (Get a Season Ticket while I am at it!) but heard there isnt loads of employment. Might stay at home and do it at Queens Belfast. Other options are do a PGCE in Chem, government are rolling out plans to award graduates with a 1st a £20k bursary to do a PGCE in STEM subjects. Then I could do a Masters with the OU and still work while I look for a decent job... decisions decisions...

I applied for a Lab job that needed 5 GCSE's, I have a HND in Computing + almost 2 years of Chem + 5 years experience working in a lab. I was told there were 300 in for the job by the interviewer, didnt get past the first stage.

A friend did his year work placement in the public sector and they advertised 3 office jobs at £26k pa. 1200 people applied. The 3 people that got the jobs were 2 solicitors who couldnt get work and one graduate who had been doing that job already for a year.

  13. He doesn't have a correct view on my experience and qualifications though. I don't need to go for a minimum wage job, the job i was let go from was way over minimum wage.

If i'm getting interviews from places with offers of wages of around 16-18k, at least i'm attracting interest. My NVQ level and experience with certain software in payroll has gotten me so close 3 times now, but unfortunately there was always one person better than me.

I know what he's trying to say, start from the bottom and work your way up, but i've already started from the bottom and worked my way up. I started my apprenticeship/NVQ level 2 only earning 95 quid a week, and then got accepted for another job because of my NVQ level, and i was earning a good wage. Unfortunately i finished all my work, and they had no more work for me to do.

If i have to get a ****ty job at ASDA eventually i will, but i'm going to keep on trying. The job i'm currently awaiting a response for, the manager of the department said she was interested in me because there is a new type of software that other applicants don't have experience with, and they are willing to provide training, but since i already have the experience, i don't need it and can start straight away.

They even gave me time over the closing date to get my application in, so they must have thought i was worth considering.

Thanks for your advice though, i appreciate it <ok>

  14. Sorry mate, but i didn't spend a year doing my qualification and overall 2 years working my bollocks off to get the experience, just to take a step down and take a minimum wage job.

I have plenty of savings to keep me going whilst out of work <ok>

  16. I feel sorry for the people that have spent a bomb on their degrees, are in debt and can't get a job.

I don't see why nearly everyone wants to go to uni. Put yourself in debt and there's no guarantee you'll get a job.

    Most graduates are struggling.

I know a bloke from my old school, who has had a degree in physics for a year now and can't get a job, and is working in Morrisons...

Probably due to the education side of things my man!

I accept, you have experience. And obviously thats a fantastic thing to have. But mate....one massive flaw. You say you will stay your savings for now. But mate you've been out of work 5 months already. If you dont get another job in 2 months. That will be 7 months and no job. It will look bad on your CV even now with a 5 month gap.

Get out there, and do something constructive. Even if its voluntary work. Just something that shows an employer you havent sat on your arse for months on end.

I dont mean to sound harsh Tash. I just think aside from being abit over the top, you're an alright guy. I dont wanna see you do poorly.

As has been said, NVQ Level 2 isn't what you want, 3/4 at the minimum is where you want to be. Don't argue with people who are giving you advice Tash, they're trying to help.

  19. I do appreciate the advice... and i know people are just trying to help, why do you constantly try to make me feel like i'm being a dick to everyone?

I said i appreciate the advice, but i disagree with what some people are saying. Sorry <doh>

Getting work anywhere at the minute is tough, and your ambition is admirable, however as some have said getting yourself back into work is the key thing. Once you have a foot in then you can start thinking about working your way up and looking for better wages, based on performance etc.

I finished my phd last year and still found it difficult to get into the elite jobs, mainly because once people have worked their way up there they don't often leave easily. I took a job lecturing at a local college, and quickly moved into university lecturing etc. I love my job as well, which is the most important thing!!
