I think if you just asked for fish and chips in Hull and East Riding, is certainly the case in Brid, you would be automatically served haddock. You had to specify cod.

In the 1960/1970s when Hull had a fishing industry and my parents had a fish and chip shop, fish and chips wsa always cod and chips basically because cod was cheaper than haddock.

Absolutely sure, and that is probably the reason haddock Is the fish in fish and chips today.

 

Strange that fish and chips in Cottingham at that time was Haddock not Cod.

 

Gainsborough always served haddock unless you asked for cod in those days as far as I remember.

Lived in Cottingham in the 50's and Hull in the 60's and can confirm Yardley Tigers memory that you were served cod unless you asked for haddock which as he states was more expensive.

Fish and chips here is haddock as well, you usually have to ask them to put a cod on when you walk in unless it's a Friday or Saturday.
