call me naieve BUT on hearing that Newcastle are on the verge of coming back in with an improved offer for Robbie the bit that most amazed me was that they are willing to treble his wages to 12k a week. Meaning that he is currently on £4k a week at that valley (maths not my strong point but even I can work that out). £4k a week for a league 1 goalkeeper, maybe I`m way behind the times but it seems a tad excessive to be honest and as he has turned down an improved contract offer from us I wonder what exactly that offer was....£5k £6k a week. Your thoughts please.
One of my workmates, about 21, went to a casino with his mates. They said they were professional footballers playing for Leyton Orient and gave themselves exotic names. They were treated like royalty, stunning ladies appeared and drinks were supplied free. So £4,000 pw is not a lot for royalty!
I heard they were trebling the wage offer from £4k to £12k... Meaning that Newcastle's original offer would have been £4k a week.
Good luck to him...!! Football is his job at the end of the day. If someone offered me a three or four year contract on three times my current salary I'd be off like a bloody shot...!!
If thats the case why release that figure shouldnt they be upping the bid to us not telling the world how much they are offering the player that aint gonna sway us is it ,it means FA to charlton. True enough Franco but football is different to other buisiness`s it just is.
We will have to agree to disagree Mikey. Do the maths on 12k a week for four years of your life. This ammount of money for anyone is life changing. Question - Is he any better than Hamer or Sullivan...? I think not. It is for this reason and this reason alone that I couldn't give a monkeys if he goes. If he don't want to sign a contract he goes... Simple as that!!
That number doesn't surprise me, after a lot of managing experience (Football Manager) that figure seems just about right once the agent's done with you.
Semedo, Youga and Racon last season were our top earners, with 6k - FACT Going on that basis, Robbie could quite possibly be on 4k, we had the 3/4th largest wage budget last season in the league!
Don't forget he was trying to negotiate a sensible cut for us, which he isn't obliged to do. Is he better than Sullivan - yes, sullivan adds nothing that Elliot hasn't got, no more commanding and had greater tendency to concede(however you quantify that) Better than Hamer? Hard to tell, I didn't think he judged the flight of the ball too well tonight but organised his defines well, made some solid stops too. Elliot is inderstandably easy to underrate
When I said I meant that I feel there's nothing between our three senior keepers. Imo they're all much of a muchness, one doesn't particularly stand out from the other two as far as I'm concerned. On that basis, I would pick from Sullivan or Hamer as they are committed to being at the club, at least until the end of this season.
Few points: I don't believe the 4k figure (considering its source), but Elliot took a wage cut already (when re-signing a contract - due to the fact he was already earning too much). Also, if the 4k is true, and he's been willing to take a wage cut (as he has said himself), let's assume down to 3k, with the board wanting him to take a cut down to 2k, 2/3k a week would be an acceptable wage for a top League One teams first choice keeper. There's no point comparing us with 'average' League One (and their average wages) because, quite frankly, we're a much larger (and richer) team than the likes of Yeovil or Brentford. Also, just to add to what Hell-Bent posted, Elliot is (in my opinion) a better goalkeeper than Sullivan and Hamer (from the limited games I've seen both in). Sullivan, whilst perhaps being louder than Elliot, is far more prone to concede and just doesn't seem capable of pulling of the 'spectacular saves' we see from Elliot. Also, for all the stick Elliot gets about his weight, Sullivan is far more chunkier than Robbo (interestingly enough, according to the official stats, Sullivan, Pope and Gough are all heavier than Elliot). As for Hamer, I haven't seen much of him (I doubt many of us have), but from seeing him this evening, he pulled off a few good saves, but was appalling at commanding his area - he did shout (or rather, scream) a lot, but he's just not loud enough to be heard.
If they're negotiating with the player now, that would suggest they reached an agreement with the club and have been given permission to speak to the player. It's fairly early and I might be confused, but I thought that was the way it worked.
