In his time at Old Trafford, George Best (1946- 2005) set the bar for all United wingers that would follow. The young boy from Belfast graced the pitch with such a delightful enthusiasm and love for the game that people paid for their ticket just in hope that he would produce that one thing, which was just a little bit special. The Northern-Irishman was the first player to fill the gap left by the late great Duncan Edwards (1936-1958) who had his life tragically cut short in the Munich Air Disaster. Thanks to his sublime touch, playful arrogance and undoubted genius, the winger was able to do things in a match that only the likes of Pele & Maradonna could reproduce, but regrettably, due to his nationality he was never able to showcase his skills on the world stage. Regardless, George was undoubtedly considered one of the finest footballers of his time.

Since then, the Stretford End has always looked for wingers that embody the spirit of Manchester United; Hard-Working, Exciting and Brilliant. In Sir Alex’s time, we have been lucky enough to witness just some of these attributes displayed on the pitch, shown especially for the past twenty years by a brilliant Welshman who goes by the name of Ryan Giggs. Nobody has appeared in a United shirt more often than the speedy winger (859 apperances) who has, arguably, had the most illustrious club career ever. However, it is has been on the other side of the field where the problem of being a United winger has had to be solved and re-solved.

In his time at Manchester United...

Should United buy a winger in the summer? Glad to see Obertan go? or is Nani our next #7?

Utd's midfield is quite weak and does need strengthing in the wide and CM position. Obertan has been dreadful at times though tbh he rarely gets an outing. Anyway with only Nani regularly threatening as well as Valencia (when fit), Utd do need another winger to offer a goal threat and provide creativity. Bebe is still young and very inexperienced and of course the jury is still very much out.

Don't know who they would buy or be prepared to pay for considering the crazy prices seen yesterday, but Alexis Sánchez has been long associated with a move to OT. Would like him to move to OT but no doubt a crazy fee would be sought and I do not believe SAF would be so stupid to give in.

wow what isit with all United fans.....

Lay off Obertan the boy gets an outing here and there never gets a run because park, nani, valencia (when fit) are all in front of him.

But then when he does get an outing once every 2 months or sub for 15 minutes we expect miracles from him. Like Anderson he needs a run he needs to have faith shown in him.

Bebe should have gone on loan I think because he will never get a chance at the moment I just believe that Fergie wants to keep him at United so he knows what hes doing in training because as Fergie has stated he is very raw and he needs to be nurtured the United way.

I'm not saying Obertain should be sold, but while the lad could do with a run in the team, he also needs to buck up his ideas. Interesting to remember what Laurent Blanc his then manager said as news of the transfer broke:

"I was surprised, but it is an unexpected chance for him to play with one of the best clubs in the world.
"Manchester United have been tracking him for a long time. They certainly hope to advance him, something that Bordeaux and Lorient have failed to do.
"He has the potential, but he must overcome psychological and mental challenges so he can express his true value."

Bebe isn't going to be used as a winger any more, Fergie's come out and said he'll use him as a striker. A good call having seen his crosses. I still remember that game against Wolves *shudders*

Bebe's main problem is he seems unsure how hard he can actually hit the ball, so he usually ends up ballooning his crosses out of the ground.

Would be interesting to see him as a striker though – no doubt he's a physical presence.

Yeah I recall Fergie saying both Bebe and Obertan may both actually be forwards. they both have the size and speed! I think both given a few years on the 'Ronaldo' regime could really develop! not quite sure Obertan could emulate Henry though....

And Oliver Norwood...hmmm... I think Darren Gibson looked a better prospect, as does Tunnicliffe. Same boat as Corry Evans though.

I did a piece on Will Keane the other day though

You really must not rate Corry Evans or Olive Norwood if you think that tool Gibson is better!!!!

I was trying to say when Gibson was at norwood's stage of development he looked like a better prospect, he looked like a guaranteed starter for the future. However, I think Gibson has gone backwards compared to his time on loan at Wolves, since then he's lost his best asset- his passing.

His passing was excellent i remember... its a confidence thing i think... but his main problem is his touch and vision, just 2 slow.. always looks a step behind

Norwood whenever I have seen highlights of him play, looks composed and a good passer of the ball. His set plays also look excellent something Gibson is bad at.

    I like Obertan.

His confidence has come on leaps and bounds from last year, especially as he has put some weight on.

I just don't know where his best position is tbh with you. He hasn't quite got the pace/skill yet to be an out and out winger, but I'm doubtful of his finishing. Maybe a loan spell at another premier league club that struggles for decent wide players? Wolves would have been a good one for him to have gone to this window with Kightly still injured.

Gibson never used to have to rely on his speed but now his confidence drop has just exposed his weakness. I don't think he'll be able to regain his confidence at United though, final chance loan spell? And Obertan I think is probably best as a forward, I don't think he has the final ball to be a winger, I think he definitely has the potential to do well especially if he could learn to head the ball!
