The first competitive game in English football to have a video referee, will be the FA Cup third round tie between Brighton and Palace, in January.
The FA confirmed in its statement that the technology will only be employed to counteract "clear and obvious errors" on specific incidents in three situations: goals, penalty decisions and straight red cards or mistaken identity for red or yellow cards. The VAR will automatically check every relevant incident and will inform the referee of any clear and obvious error. The referee then has the power to change the original decision based on the new information provided by the VAR, or watch a replay on the side of the pitch.
I've yet to see an example of this having a positive impact on a game. Even sports that have used it for years throw up dubious decisions.

Crystal Palace fans have received an apology from Sussex police over claims that supporters tried to get into last week’s match at Brighton with knives and knuckledusters. A police statement the day after the game referred to fans trying to get into the stadium through fire exit doors in the south stand, where away supporters were housed. “We are aware that a significant number of people attempted to enter the ground with pyrotechnics, knives and knuckledusters, which were found following efforts to gain access through fire exit doors in the south stand,” it said. On Thursday the police accepted this was not the case. “The reference to weapons being found discarded at the stadium following the Brighton v Crystal Palace match on November 28 was based on information logged by our officers on the night and done so in good faith,” they said. “Subsequently, it has been established that no such items were physically recovered at the stadium or in the city. We accept that this information was incorrect and the tweet published earlier today by one of our officers was wrong. Sussex Police apologises to both clubs and their supporters.” Brighton are due to host Palace again on Monday 8 January in the FA Cup third round.
Saw plenty on the news about the fighting, weapons, violence and near riot situation, but nothing about the retraction.

So - just taking one game at random from last season . . . . Arsenal away - Sanchez clear handball into the net, Koscielny (or whatever centre back it was) who should have been sent off - straight red) - surely the VAR makes it harder to right royally f**k decisions up ? What about West Ham away - Huddlestone giving away that 'penalty'?? We got some right rotten decisions against us - the only one i remember that went our way was Snodgers getting a dodgy penalty. If the VAR can rule out bollocks like that, surely it makes things fairer and the amount of 50 50 decisions that go the way of the 'big teams', must make the game more even. The game is sooo fast and refs can't keep up with the play so they have to have help - whether this is it I don't know but FIFA can't be ostriches for ever. Goal line technology works - give this a chance.
Goal technology is a step too far. Vid refs hold up the game, don't get decisions right, it's subjective, it doesn't improve the game, it takes out an important aspect of the game, it excludes certain decisions. I will not give this a chance, it's had one & failed. It's **** & bowing to the Soccer AM modern football **** types who say things like "tekkers" & "accy"
I've stopped watching city until the Allams have gone. Now I'm going to have to stop watching football on tv until this ridiculous idea is put to bed. Time to find another sport to watch (as long as it isn't on sky).

I am generally not a favour of it, I think it will to some degree spoil the game we have grown up to love. The problem is now, there is so much money involved an incident missed or got wrong by the ref can have millions of pounds impact on a club. Unfortunately it is inevitable it will come in, I just hope that it is only for penalty and red/yellow card decisions.
A CB in the A-League was sent off for spitting at a player which the ref missed at the time. Goals have been reversed based on the player being offside, penalties awarded for clear fouls missed, etc. The only issue at this stage is the time needed to make the decision.
Surely something can be said for a system which might eliminate some of the blatantly wrong and exasperatingly unjust decisions.
