I reckon they'll get a hat full of goals but there again they could fold or I could be clutching at straws.
It’ll probably be the first time many of the England players will have met their accountants face-to-face.
Southgate's job safe for next few tournaments regardless of how well he does in Russia: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42220432 Torn on this really, on the one hand the England team has been crying out for stability for a while and Southgate has history with the younger age groups and seems willing to give them a chance, so having him installed for the long term should help with both of those things. On the other hand being told your job is safe in a results driven business seems pretty strange as it sort of takes away the fear of doing badly = losing your job, so you could become complacent in the role. What do people who actually care about England think?
I accept it’s a results-driven business, but I think in the case of a younger manager in the best job he’s ever likely to get (unless he wins a major tournament and gets poached by a global giant club), having your position guaranteed is a good thing. Southgate is more likely to take risks if his job isn’t constantly on the line, and that must be good for the future development of the players and the style of football they play.
I think it's a good idea too, means we might have a manager who looks to the long term rather than worrying about his job every 5 minutes.
Stability? How did that go with Hodgson? Hodgson took England to 3 tournaments and was awful in everyone of them, but his job was constantly safe. Rinse repeat, if Hodgson was foreign he wouldn’t have lasted half the time he did.
How did that go with Hodgson? Given the same reassurances and was still useless. It’s a results based business like most areas of employment. Maybe we should all not care of our results at work and see how long we last?
Also gives him power with the team if they know he is there long term. I'm also cheered by the youngsters doing well which suggests some things are being done right....as long as they get game time in the EPL or another top league.
If we're willing to give him long term coupled with huge changes to grass roots etc. I would happily ignore results for the time being. And Hodgson didn't get that long really. Just two full campaigns.
But he also had a tournament when Capello left which was pressure free and he had a free reign to whatever he wanted. God that was boring. If we bomb out of the tournament with no wins, he’s got to go. Simple as that.
I was calling for a 10 year contract for the next England’s manager after Roy went. Sadly the man j wanted to get it was Eddie Howe and that didn’t happen.
I bet the German national team are glad you weren’t in charge of their Football Association when they had a long-term manager who played kids straight from the U23 side in successive tournaments, with the long term plan of creating the best side in the world.
Simple answer to that. We need to rebuild from the bottom, grass roots up. The best England players aren’t good enough and so I don’t expect any change in results while we carry on as we are. We need to work on a new generation, build our structure within football to achieve it and that’s where the biggest barrier is. The Premier League. They are nothing to do with England or the FA and so don’t need care about anything apart from their product. England have had great success in the last two years at younger levels. Go look at those teams and see how many are playing first team football in The Premier League. That’s our biggest problem.
I don't remember Hodgson being told publically by the FA that he had 3 tournaments pressure free. Surely the thinking behind it is that Southgate knows the u21s and (I think) did well with them? Put them in the squad and let them learn without the expectation of winning anything at first and see where they are for the Qatar World Cup in 4 years time, knowing that the manager who has given them the chance and believed in them will still be at the helm. If they bomb out in qualifying then it could be time for a change, but beyond that I think it is fair to let him have a long term go at it. Every England fan I know bemoans picking the same old faces, if the manager knows he doesn't have to get immediate results he will (should) be more inclined to try a different approach, especially someone with Southgate's background. But I don't really care as I'd rather see England out of every tournament ASAP, hence why I was asking for opinions from people who do want to see them succeed
100% correct. Last season the percentage of English players in the Premier League dropped to 32%, the lowest since the league was created. That’s the highest percentage of foreign players of any European league. http://www.skysports.com/football/n...ercentage-of-foreign-players-8211-uefa-report
This is completely true and the next question is do you want to sacrifice the overall quality of the PL (in the short term at least) for a better national team? This is what Germany did when they revamped the Bundesliga and, to a lesser extent, Serie A did as well
