Great session for England, starving Smith of runs and getting them out at the other end. Loving Root's captaincy.

Aussies having a good session, Smith gets his century and his partnership with Cummings has put on 70 so far as the gap closes...

Yes, agree Sooper ............... great fightback by Smith and co.
A real captains knock, hopefully he will carry on for a while.

This test match is displaying qualities from both sides, justifying why The Ashes test series has no peer.

Australia all out for 328 with a commanding lead of 26 runs!

Ok, not commanding but a lead nevertheless.
One stage there, we looked likely to be well behind England’s first innings total but as mentioned earlier, a real captains knock by Smith.

It all adds up for an exciting second innings.
    Who will crumble?
    Who will forge ahead?

England 2 - 33 in the second innings at stumps.
Aussiepace bowler Hazlewood captures two quick wickets.

All in all, a great day for the Aussies....

Need Root to do a smith and go large tomorrow.

Did you see England almost snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the League, Aussie?

My wife asked why I only show emotion when England or qpr are losing. Just losing, not winning apparently.:emoticon-0140-rofl:

    No I didn't Tooting.
I've been watching the cricket and forgot about the league.
Two of Englands finest, Widdop & Graham both play for my favourite league team, St George Illawarra Dragons.
Widdop has been captain and Graham ( who only joined last month ) may be joint captains next season.
Love the team with the big red V !

So it will be Australia vs England final in the league ................ should be a good tussle.

Good day and advantage the Aussies. Smith showed us how to stay in and keep cool. I said yesterday that Cook and Root need to step up because you cannot rely and put pressure on the new boys...so what does Cook do? <doh> For such a good batsman Cook has been poor so far.

Looking like it might be a series too far for Cook. He's certainly been effective for England over the years, but never good to watch in my opinion.

TBH Stroller I panic when he bats now. If we had someone like Smith it would be a different story.

    Cook's test record: Innings: 268 Runs: 11,638 Average: 46.00

He has scored nearly 3,000 test runs more than any other England player in history (A tad better than "effective").

This may well be one tour too many for him, but with that record and such a fantastic average, I'm not sure what choice the selectors had when you consider all the inexperience at the top of the order.

After all these years they have worked him out.

Still can’t think of anyone else to open though, and I bet he gets a ton at some stage this series. I just hope it’s a ton that matters.

Wickets are likely to get quicker after this test, Starc already going on about it. I hope we have a plan.

Having watched the highlights, it is becoming clear that the Aussies have the better bowling attack, with gobby twat Lyon being the best spinner too.
I think it will come down to how well we bat, especially Root, who, after taking a fearful blow really braved it out towards the end. England have Broad and Anderson, but that's about it I feel.

Still think it will be 3-1 to the Aussies and I'm pretty sure we will lose this first test unless the weather intervenes.

Yes, he's scored a lot of runs and yes he had to be selected for this tour, but I've never enjoyed watching him play.

PS why do you refer to my posts without actually replying to them?

Looking a bit like this, but if we can get on top of Warner, Smith and Marsh it will be very interesting. Smith is just about the best out there at the moment though. If Stokes is allowed to play it will be even more interesting, gives us a lot more variation in the field and oomph in the batting line up.
