Chris Coleman has no doubts about Jack Rodwell's ability, but says that he has to play more and has to 'offer himself up more' if he is to turn his Sunderland career around. Sunderland spent £10million to bring the former Everton midfielder to Wearside from Manchester City in the summer of 2014, but the midfielder has since struggled to justify his price tag and win over the Sunderland faithful. Rodwell, still only 26, was the only player in the Sunderland squad relegated from the Premier League not to have an automatic pay-cut clause in his contract in the event of relegation, with the midfielder being the club's highest earner on £60,000 a week in the Championship. Coleman was asked about Rodwell, who wasn't in the squad for the 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa after picking up an injury in training, ahead of Saturday's trip to Burton Albion. The new Sunderland boss said that he is happy to help Rodwell, but says that it is down to the individual. Coleman, who only took charge last weekend, said: "I think that you have to look at Jack and think talent wise he is a very, very good player and he hasn't played a lot. "He has been here for two or three years, I think. An individual has to want to change himself, forget about good advice here, good advice there" "Unless you want to change yourself and do something yourself, it doesn't matter what anybody says to anybody" "Ability wise, all day long, great ability, but of course you have got to look and say 'you have got to play more Jack, you have to offer yourself up to it more'. "Talent wise it is a no-brainer, but we need Jack to be on the pitch not in the treatment room, and that is down to Jack Rodwell. "He has got to want to do that because if you are the type of person that needs pushing all of the time you are the type of person in life that doesn't accept accountability. "We are all accountable. It is as simple as that."
Sounds like he’s about to get the kick up the arse he absolutely needs. Especially since he’s now by far the highest paid player at the club.
Chris' polite way of saying "stop being a lazy, cowardly, hiding waste of space, grow some balls and earn your wage you ****ing fraud".
I don't think players lose their talent as they spend a whole life developing it. They lose things like confidence, pace, agility, desire. I hope for Rodwell it's just pace.
The bloke obviously doesnt have any self respect or give a toss about us as a club or being a footballer anymore. He had a rare chance to play Wed night and he should have been chomping at the bit to show our new manager Grayson and all the others were wrong about him. I dont believe for one minute he hurt his back and neither does Chris by the sound of it. Hes more than happy to do feck all and pick up nearly 250k a month. The bloke is a disgrace and i really hope karma comes back and puts him flat on his ar$e.
He has no intention of even trying to justify his fee or exhorbitant wages, he is laughing all the way to the bank. If he were sued for taking money under false pretences, there would be no shortage of witnesses for the prosecution.
He's just angling to be released in Jan to get 2.5 years somewhere. Is it his agent ? Does Jack know he's physcally not up to it ? His time here mirrors his time at City, get rid in Jan. People on here blame O'Shea and Cattermole but he, on that money is the plop in the pool.
Someone needs to sit him down and say 2 things to him. 1. if you do **** all then once your contact runs out you will get nothing like 60k a week and will be lucky to be playing in league 1 2. How do you want to be remembered? at the moment you will be remembered as a lazy twat who flushed his talent down the toilet.
That is a shocking indictment from Coleman which I'm reading as that he really needs to start giving a ****..
I didn't even realise how young he still is. 26 years old with the body of an 82 year old man and the spine of a Jelly fish.
why the hell can he not beat a player or get a cross in ? anyway I would pay his contract up, and sign Grabban in January by doubling his Bournemouth wages, he is our key player. Eh Rodwell IS a midfielder Tees, and enjoy your petty **** I it does not bother me one iota.
Why do we need to sign Grabben now when weve got him till May anyway. Do you really think hed sign aswell with the risk of playing in league 1 next season? Rodwells not a winger either you fecking ******.
You should apply for the SAFC PR job, Nacho. Very refreshing for Coleman to come out with this, too. Bang on. Man-up Roswell or **** right off
Hold my hand up for criticising those two, but at least they try, the lazy parasite we are talking about doesnt even do that, he must boil the water of the players in the squad who are giving their all, even if it is way below what is required.
With just the right amount of carrot to go with the stick, emphasising how talented he is. Clever management.
Not to mention the fact that Grayson already said we’d had to really stretch to cover Grabbans wage as it is, at the loss of other targets. Small fact that paying off Rodwell would cost over £6million as well...
