I'm not alone thinking this lad was ready made for Newcastle.......young/cheap/regular scorer.
I'm just not sure why we seem to be pursuing very flaky targets on the continent......from blokes who don't wish to come to blokes who seem to be as loyal as the next pay day.
Anyone who comes for decent money ( and I'm hoping they are coming) will arrive with more pressure than a cheaper signing.
So what's Pardew's criteria for the No9 shirt?

  2. He's scored two easy as piss goals, and he couldn't make a simple pass to win the game for his team. He's not worth 7m.

I'd rather we went for someone else.

Typical knee jerk reaction to him getting off to a good start. He's only had one good goalscoring season in the Championship and 2 or 3 weeks ago I'd say less than half the people on here wanted him. It's just fickle.

He only cost 4.5m Tash. I think he would have been good for us. I also agree though his goals have been easy to score and he could still end up a poor signing. The jury is out on Long but I think he will do well and we will be wishing we signed him.

The Chelsea goal was NOT easy-as-piss. He had to gain control of the ball and hold of Alex (who's a beast), and then finish (which he did brilliantly). Also he noticed the misplaced pass and pounced on it.

Saying that, it's only two games, and as Smudger said, a bit of a knee-jerk reaction. He does look hungry and works really hard, though.

People did the same with Aguero. Had a mint debut then everyone thought he would get Man City the title. In his next match, he didn't look anywhere near as good.

I wish we did get Long now, but he could still be a flop. They were both good goals in a way and it doesn't matter how you score goals as long as you do score them. Ruud Van Nistelrooy rarely scored screamers, they were mainly piss easy goals, but he was there to score the piss easy goals. We may have missed out on something special with Long or he may fizzle out and get no more than 10 goals this season. Who knows!

What's with this Maiga not being loyal? He clearly wants to come here and play for us, didn't Ben Arfa go on strike to get his move here?

I bet if he was doing ****e you would be thanking Pardew for not getting him!

    Fickle or what. <doh>

Are you a complete imbecile. No, sorry, don´t answer that. We already know!

Who would you, in all your vast football knowledge, suggest we go for, within our owner´s budget, and our wages structure.

Long cost 6m and is on 25 grand a week. Would have been well worth a punt imo.

I think Long has looked pretty good. His goals looked easy, but would you have expected one of our strikers to put himself in the position to score? It isn't always the shot that makes the good striker, it is being in the right place, making the right runs, and looking for the ball that makes it look easy. I like Long's work rate...he certainly does not stroll around waiting for something to happen. he makes life difficult for the defender. As a defender, I would much rather mark a player with great touch who expects his team to get the ball to him in the right position than someone who works hard all game creating space for himself.

New season new style of play | Football, Newcastle Sport News 24/7

    Football, Newcastle

Following the recent arrivals and departures, and the uncertainty over one or two players at the moment, I am wondering what style of play we will adopt with the new look squad when the Premier League season kicks in?

From what I've seen of and heard about Demba Ba, he is an old fashioned target man, so the old Barton out wide continually crossing to Carroll routine might resurrect itself with the ex-West Ham man as the new focal point. That has never quite worked with Shola Ameobi in the team.

Then again, Hatem Ben Arfa is one hell of a direct player. A bit like a young Wayne Rooney, he is always lining up a dig at goal. At Darlington I thought he kept hold a shade too long to line up his shots, often overlooking better placed players. Let's hope he's more free with the passing once the serious business starts.

Yohan Cabaye looks the real deal; a superb playmaker who can slot balls through defences and create chances. He is very comfortable on the ball.

The thing is, if we sign a pacy striker (Jermain Defoe was mentioned today) alongside Ba, then surely something or someone has to give in midfield. We have got five quality choices and we always play four at the back.

Cheick Tiote surely gets pencilled in first, then Ben Arfa when he is fit, then Cabaye... which leaves Marveaux and Barton to fight for one spot.

Anyway, I love the options we now have but you can see that Alan Pardew will have the proverbial nice headache when everyone is fit.

In the meantime, would you like to see the team continuing to play the system that worked so well in the first-half of last season? Or do you see our best players being accommodated better under a new system?

    ...................................................................................

Like this positive one ?Do your homework before you let your arse do the talking.
