But therein lies the skill of a genuinely good manager on the psychological front. It's creating that belief, both within individuals and as a unit.

Completely agree on the league this year. It's a lot of dull, defensive football bar the top boys.

    And Watford to be fair.

I don't think it will improve either, down side of so much money.

Just being realistic FLT , take away a wonderful goal from Boufal and a last minute soft penalty against West ham , I think MP2 would of been sacked already.

Take away lucky moments from any manager and they are likely to be sacked. Football relies heavily on luck, from signing players to picking up points. wouldn't be fun otherwise.

If one of our several shots from inside the 6 yard box against Swansea had gone in, and had a single lucky break in one of our other draws, we'd be 8th, 2 points from 5th and not having this conversation. (in other words we'd be Burnley).

edit: and you can probably outdo that just including the points lost due to Forsters form.

Take away Stuart Burt and we might have won the League Cup and be playing in Europe this season.

If the Board are presently contemplating MP's employment status then it's quite a twist that they find themselves in. The squad strengths are very similar, although Puel had injuries to key players for large parts of the season. Looking back on it now, my instincts that the Board had not backed Puel sufficiently with quality replacements for Pelle and Mane absolutely remains. It is an old view dating back to the close of last season's summer transfer window, but I believe that it is the key reason why MP now coaches a team who can't score. Puel managed to get the team playing so that they just about coped not having the big guy and the little guy. Personally, the more I think about it, the bigger his achievement becomes, despite the lack of points. As I've said several times before, I'll take boring football and winning over entertaining football and losing. A football team has to learn how to win first, or they are nothing. Entertainment can come later.
The bottom line is, the Board are at fault here for the reasons mentioned above [the genius that is Gabby should never be considered a replacement for either Mane or Pelle]. MP is at fault for not coping as well as Puel, under simpler circumstances, ie, not playing in Europe and no more League Cup matches.

Jan Bednarek on the list of biggest flops so far in the Premier League, he does stand out a little bit as all the other names on the flop list are undisputed starters and he hasn't actually played any league minutes!

“I have heard Southampton is such a good club for young players,” said Jan Bednarek after he completed his move from Lech Poznan. “It was key for me that the young players are playing here. That was most important, that young players are getting the chance here and can improve themselves.” Bednarek has yet to play a single minute of league football and was last glimpsed on the substitutes’ bench back in August. The highlight of the 21-year-old Pole’s season so far is his full international debut, against Kazakhstan in September, and even that only lasted one minute. Not so much a bad signing, perhaps, as an unnecessary one: instead of getting the chance Bednarek had been led to expect he is engaged in a personal battle with Florin Gardos for the title of Southampton’s fifth-choice centre-back."

    Found this on twitter.....

David Unsworth to be given caretaker role @Everton until the end of the season. Majority shareholder, Farhad Moshiri, believes he can land his no.1 target in the summer #efc

And our squad is the 8th most expensively assembled I think (as of last year anyway), and we finished...8th. Trend of money spent = league position continues, in general anyway.
